I say 1440 for the sole reason that things would be way to small for my eyes on a 1660

1680 because of the additional 100 pixels of vertical space. text size can always be increased.

1440 is much better. it's the perfect resolution for 15.4 inch laptops. from my experience, 1680 is just eye straining and not necessary.

dell rocks imo now.. lol just got off the phone with a specialized supervising rep.. man what a sweet call that was..im done with the vostro 1500 lol.. moving to a inspiron..i have to decide on color and whether or not i want a 1520 or 1720 now.. basically the coupon for 325 off plus and additional 300$ off anything i want and no difference in price from the 1440 to the 1680.. lol.. proves a point yell and scream enough and you will get somewhere...also call and harass the crap out of them about the issues you have.. dont take no for an answer and always speak to whoever is in charge the res on my 22" im on now is 1680 by 1050 how will this compare to the 15.4" though man i think that will be super small

i really like either the blue or black but man the blue is like 16 days out, the only nice thing is this will give my card enough time to be credited...so i can do 0% on the new system otherwise i have to use a non 0% credit card which sucks

I ordered 1680x1050 on my 1520. The display model at the Dell kiosk had 1680x1050. It wasn't too small for me and I liked the extra space on the desktop. Besides, the font and icon size is easily changed. The 1680x1050 also has the best viewing angles of any of the screens.

WSXGA+ on a 15 incher. I have 1400x1050 on my 14.1" T60 and love it. Higher res screens are the way to go in my opinion.

Make sure you get something that you'll be able to live with.

To play games, 1440x900 is perfect

I agree my 1440 x 900 is perfect. You get the extra desktop space plus can game at that resolution.

yeah i think ill go for the higher res..

you cant game at 1680?? couldnt you just adjust the res down or will that look horrible??

i dont do a ton of gaming.. mostly business and some games so i think for everyday use the 1680 would be the best choice ... i just dont know if i now want to tote that 17" around or just go 15 again..

    1680*1050

Text is the perfect size and gives me plenty of space for graphics work.

(Wouldn't it be awesome to be able have a screen that is able to display both on a laptop, use the lower resolution for gaming and the higher resolution for graphics?)

I don't see why not. I do that with my desktop's LCD monitor.
And I've changed the 1024x768 screen on an old laptop to 640x480 in order to play an old game that needed that resolution.
Anyone actually try it with their 1680x1050?

Sorry, you can game at the 1680 x 1050 resolution. I just ment at a native resolution of 1440 x 900 your pushing the 8600m gt.

It really all depends on what setting you enjoy and which video card you choose. I assumed you were looking at the 8600m gt from your signature.

Here are some benchmarks I did with mine and the 1440 x 900 screen.

This is kind of a dumb question, but how much of a resemblance is there between the 1420/1400 and other 14" laptop screens? I don't have a Dell close to me so the best I could do is go to CompUSA and check out other laptops. The only experience I have with widescreen laptops is on my friend's 15", she has it as 1660 and everything is waaay too small. Doesn't really help me with the 14" 1280 vs. 1440 dilemma though.

I think it really depends on how good your eyes are. If you have the eyes of a fighter pilot, go with the higher resolution. If you don't go with 1440x900.

I checked out my dad's laptop (17" 1920x1200), and that was too small for my taste. 1680x1050 would be about the same on a 15.4" screen, so I opted for 1440x900 on my new 1520.

Yes they can be adjusted, Also tthink about this You said that you have the same resolution on your 22 incher and you will use the laptop for business. Do you think you can be as productive with less vertical space?

If the answer is yes than 900 will suit you fine, if the answer is no then you will miss being able to fit more of your work in the screen.

Most 14.1" laptop screens are 1280x800, which I think is about right for me for this screen size.

Actually if you try to go for a lower res on a 1680 then it wont look that good since downscaling introduces a lot of artifacts and jagged edges.... Always using the native resolution gives the best feel....

You ll be able to play games without any hassles but the thing is it is advisable to run always at the native resolution.... If your game supports that high res and the game runs pretty fast at that high res then no problemo at all.... But if it doesnt then you have to switch to a lower resolution.... The aliasing effects due to scaling wont be noticeable much but it will be present for sure....

Get the 1680x1050 resolution - you'll be able to have two word documents side by side with that resolution - Also I think that a smaller fraction of the 1680x1050 panels are defective.
