People this is first notebook and I did hear that we have to actually wait for a Dell rep to come and open it??

I heard that this is to check for any damages in transit and to install software???

Is it true.. I probably couldn't resist opening the box... let alone wait for some one to come after such a long waiting period..

didn't get a carry case though....

you dont have to worry because laptops are securely packaged in a way that tends to avoid any physical damage. if it's DOA then you can probably send it back to Dell.

Where did you hear that a Dell rep would have to open it?

I can just see a caravan of Dell employees driving all over the world opening people's boxes.

At that point wouldn't it make more sense to have the Dell reps just deliver the laptop themselves? That would be rather interesting.

here in India Dell rep do come for opening the package. You just have to call them after you receive the package and they will come same day(in most cases). I received my laptop two weeks back and a dell rep came after 2-3 days to open the package(delayed due to bad weather at my place and weekend holiday), he came to check if laptop received is not damaged, everything ordered is there in package and also gave demo of vista, laptop features(since this is my first laptop) etc.

Here in China there are two optional installation options, which if I understand correctly are:

Consumer standard installment 128.70 RMB ($16.90)
as above with training 228.15 RMB ($29.13)

I guess that is a similar visit.

There is also some kind of 'installation' associated with the built-in wireless data capability.
