Well, the 9600 PRO TURBO is really the 3rd best, if you count the 9800, but thats besides the point. I would probably go with the i6000 too, because its new. I would think the 8600 has a slight advantage in gaming (if you do plan to play games), so that can be something to consider.

thanks for the replies...Right now I think I will just stick witht he 8600. When I recongigured the price without tax was actually $1217.00..not that big a savings..plus I like the idea of having the ATI 9600 card (Not that I would probably notice the difference...

What really sucks is that no matter what I get, in 6 months it will probably be discontinued or outdated anyway.....so in that light it does not really matter does it???

That being said, I am still interested in hearing arguments for the 6000...

Well, as you might have seen already, the i8600 is already outdated (or gone would be a better word), and within a year I think the i6000 will be replaced too (i.e. dual core CPU). It really doesnt matter, get/keep whichever you like, though I do like the i6000 more because:

    1) It has more new technology
    2) Looks better

    Thats just me, though.

In fact, the 8600 is no longer being sold. Anyone who bought one within the return window should consider the i6000 or the new i9300 that should show up soon.

If you cancel an order before Dell ships it out, is there any kind of fee? Or do you go on any kind of black list?

If there is no black list, it seems like some people would abuse the total satisfaction guarantee.

Also, if you want to cancel *after* an order ships, what kind of expenses do you incur?

    Thanks,
    FreddyJoe

Hey, isn't it possible that if you get an i6000d with the ATI X300 that in a year or two you could put in a newer PCIExpress graphics card?

Harder to upgrade the 9600 methinks.

I really doubt that the 9300 is going to replace the 8600. From my perspective it looks like the 9300 is going to be another 17 inch monster. If you guys have looked, Dell makes a Latitude 810, which is probably the what the laptop that is going to replace the 8600 will be based on. It would be a BIG mistake on Dell's part to replace the 8600 (which has a 15.4 in widescreen) with a 17 inch PC. Many people would not buy it because it's screen would be so large.

Also, the 8600 sold at a different price point then the 9200. Therefore, they would also lose buyers if they raised the price of their mainstream gaming notebook.

Also, let's face it, a nVidia card with 256 megs of ram is not exactly mainstream. However, the Radeon X600 that is offered in the Latitude 810 is.

    Just something to think about

    Inspiron 8600 * WUXGA * Intel Pentium M (Dothan) 725 (1.6 GHz) * 1024 MB of DDR333 * Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo with 128 MB @ 350/250 * 60 GB HD 5400RPM * CDRW/DVD Combo Drive

The 8600 is a solid machine with great features. My main reservation is the ugly appearance. It is plain hideous. Styling is about 3 years behind Sony.

That is not to say that i6k is pretty with its artsy while trim. I don't notice it in the dark where I spend most of my time or in tungsten lighting. However in fluorescent lighting it gets me nauseous. I am looking into one of the snap in covers, like graphite or leather look.

Sony style is good, but not the best, Fujitsu is quite sexty too.
BTW, does i6000 has the glossy screen as m700 does?

No gloss but it is bright to me. I just watched Star Wars for the first time on the i6k (?120th time? total) and it was AWESOME.

The only brightview variant is on the 700m which is Sch-weet!

Yeah, I'd agree Sony is style champ no question...and the 9200/6000 look is not too far behind (well, compared to Sony its way behind, but it still looks pretty cool).

so will there be a sonoma update to the 8600? The 8100 latitude is nice, but only X600 and you can't use those insane coupons that the inspirons have :)

Thanks for the info about the Dell i6000 screen quality.

Since you mention also watching DVD's on it. How is the sound of the speakers?
Do you think the i6000 speakesr are as good as the HP ZV5000Z Harmon Kardon speakers?
(I can't use any external speakers for the purpose I'm buying my laptop for.)

I have posted in the notebookreview section a question about the display quality of the i6000 vs the HP ZV5000Z. So this answers it!

    Mike.
