Hello all! I just googled this forum and am happy to find some other i9300 owners. Overall...I have been very satisfied with its performance....especially considering the price I paid (with the $750 off coupon and free shipping)
Question: Anyone have some good experience overclocking thier GF 6800? I have been overclocking my desktops for years but have no experience with notebooks...and I am a bit nervous about it.
Coolbits reported that I could safely go to 349/702...but I knocked it down to 325/650...just to be safe. That brought my 3Dmark05 score up to 3514 (up from a score of 2981 at the stock 290/590). Not bad, I think...but does anyone have any experience or thoughts on how safe this overclock may be?...or any comments on how high I may be able to push this thing before heat becomes a serious issue? I use this system primarily for my graphic design business...but I also play alot of first person shooters in the insanely early hours of the morning (before the wife and kids wake up). I really want to get all the performance that I can out of this.

I've been oc'ing mine as high as it will go for 3 or so months now, and I play COD almost every day with no problems as of yet. I use FanGUI to monitor and adjust the fan speeds. When I am gaming I make sure the fans are on high.

The real question is what divers are being used. I stopped using the drivers Dell povides and got about a 1500 point jump in 3dmark.
-
As for the oc'ing, I understand your apprehension. I'm not brave enough to push my Go 6800 too far. I feel comfortable using the 'Optimal clock speeds' button on the nView panel though. So far the only trouble I've been experiencing is a warmer than stock laptop. Not a big deal, but it sucks when you're trying to play CS:S on a hot day. -
I am using the 72.01 drivers that I got from laptopvideo2go. I thought I would try them because, due to my inexperience with notebooks, I was leary to try non-dell drivers. (The 7201's looked like the latest that were "labelled" as Dells).
I think I am going to give XtremeG's drivers a try right now. I have been thinking about them..but I wanted to hear someone else say they were using them firstWhich version did you install? (the lateset version has a "type1" and "type2".
My specs are the following:
Pentium M 740 1.73 GHz
1 GB DDR2 Dual channel
60 GB Fujitsu 5400 rpm
nVidia GeForce 6800 Go 256 MB
17" WUXGA w/TrueLife
CDRW/DVD Combo -
Ok. I installed the type2 Xtreme-G drivers and overclocked conservatively to 325/650 and hit a improved 3731 in 3dMark05. (that sounds a little more inline with LuckMC11's score considering that he has a quicker cpu and higher overclock.)
LuckMC11: What driverset are you using? -
i think the 76.50 1s...not completely sure...but i think that's the 1...try it and tell me
-
Im using th 7.56 drivers and im getting about 3258 on 3dmark2005- overclocked to max using coolbits reg entry im getting 4028..battlefield 2 plays great maxed out on every setting possible
-
i went down by a lot from the max that it said i could have...jus 2 b on the safe side...and it still gave me a great 3dmark 05 score

Can someone please explain to me exactly how to download the laptopvideo2go.com drivers and then install them? I'm a newbie at this and I have no idea what the website is talking about when they say to modify the .INF file or whatever its called. Also, which drivers are you using? Because I hear some of you talking about using 77.something drivers but the highest I see are 76.71 drivers, and I dont think I can use them on the inspiron because it says they are 64 bit. But can anyone post a walkthrough for installing whichever drivers they are using, making it easy for a noob like me to understand?

download the 75.6 drivers extract it... the go to device manager - go to your video card , click on update drivers... manually select the driver from the extracted files. easy as that..the install setup.exe wont work.
-
-
To use the drivers with install from laptopvideo2go, you just need to download the driver you want, extract it to a folder. Then download the modified .inf file for that driver version, and copy it over the .inf file of the same name in the folder you extracted the driver to. Then run the setup.exe file to install.
Basically the .inf file is a text file that tells the installer what hardware the driver is for. The default .inf only recognized desktop hardware. The modified .inf file contains the strings for Go versions, as well as the rest. -
...or just download the latest Xtreme-G drivers. They work very well.
Piece of cake to install as well.

Well, I just finished installing the 7/6/05 Dell drivers, and I only got 160.55 MP/s at pcpitstop.com. When I used the Xtreme-G drivers from tweaksrus.com, it leaped to 290.67 MP/s without overclocking. Is my system still stable? I don't want to burn up my card. Also, why does Dell "underclock" the 6800 Go? That is very stupid. Isn't it?

I know, but the 6800, in general, is a fast card. Has someone applied the Xtreme-G drivers to a 6800 Ultra card? If so, how much of an improvement did you get?
-
Oh, I forgot to add. Is 45ÂșC ok for the 6800? I don't know the original temperature range when using the Dell drivers.
-
45 is fine, the card will throttle down it's clock rate if it gets to hot to maintain a safe temp. Under load it probalby gets up near 65 or 70, but thats still well under it's limit.
And yes, they keep the clock on the regular 6800go at a set point to create a market for the high end 6800go Ultra. It's pretty common in the graphics card industry to produce one core, and sell it at different speeds and pricepoints.
The XtremeG drivers won't hurt your card at all, they don't overclock the card unless you tell them too. The worst thing you can get is an unstable system until you change to a different driver. -
I know we are voiding warranty when doing this, but is it worth it?
-
i doubt it's worth it...only worth it for the benchmarks..and benchmarks only -
New dell drivers without OC.

a little info is better than LOL -

I got 4211 3DMarks - Coolbits set me at 359/729. I'm using ForceWare 81.94 drivers.

overclocking a video card in a laptop sounds like suicide.
-
yup..i agree completely
-
nacho and timac, you guys play cs? im getting like 40+ fps in source with the 6800 and a 1.256 ram. You different drivers would help cs?

Hi,
I've been lurking around here for quite a few days and I'm not so eager in overclocking my video card (I have an i9300 w/geforce go 6800) but I was curious as to see things like temperature and clock speeds of my processor and video card, so I downloaded RivaTuner to check my clock speeds on the video card and I've got 128/318, lol. I haven't changed drivers or anything, this is right out of the box!!! So my question is what are the real clockspeeds of the 6800 w/out going into overclocking??? I'm just curious since though I'm a gamer, I use it mostly for emulators and those aren't really that GPU intensive but my brother plays BF2 and Doom3 and I "may" want to improve performance (I don't think he cares, he plays them on a desktop with an FX 5200, lol). -

Those clocks are very low indeed - I think the video card downclocked itself to save power if you weren't playing games, or something else that would require use of the video card. Try playing a game and then see what the clocks are.
You can also use PowerStrip by EnTech Taiwan to see the clocks.
Updating the drivers to the latest helps too.
Cheers, -
Thanks, will certainly do, I'm just somewhat hesitant to do so, and as I said before, I don't really require much more since I mostly play emulators and I may consider playing KOTR and FFXI but I just want to know what are the highest clock speeds one can reach without going into overclock for future reference.

is the default speepd 290/590 for go6800s and what should be the normal temps regarding the gpu? overclocked I dont get anything above 50, should i be concerned since it is a laptop?

jhwyung,
I believe those are the defaults. The GPU is better compared to temps...it can take up to I would say about 75C before you see any problems. I have mine oc'ed it is in my sig and i never go over 70C. I idle at about 50-52C. -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
If you are idling over 57-60*C, then there is a problem. USAF seems to have good clocks - 50-52* is very reasonable.
-
So, who do I believe for temps? The nvidea panel reads and idle temp of 54-57, but the fangui reads an idle temp of 49-50
When I am playing, nvidea says 78-83, fangui reads 70-72
I know fangui reads the info straight from the bios, wouldnt the nvidia control panel do the same?

Version 2.2.2 of I9kfangui can be found here. This version corrects the temperature reading problem, but apparently an issue of control of the fans by the Bios remain.
