like aer0sense said, check soundcard drivers. also, make sure of the simple stuff, like all volume levels are not at 0 or muted. if you're playing a video file, try another player to see if it's the file (i'd recommend VLC Player).

    Just to make sure try...

Make sure the mute button on the external part of the pc, or the volume control if there is one is not turned all the way down.

Start --> Programs --> Acessories --> Entertainment --> Volume Control. Make sure that nothing is muted and the controls are up at least part way.

If that doesn't work try going to the device manager. My Computer --> Properties --> Hardware (Tab) --> Device manager --> Then go to sound devices --> then look to make sure there are no ? markes by any of the devices.

If that doesn't work try updating your sound drivers via device manager and windows update.

If that doesn't work contact dell, its most likely a fualty sound card.

Good luck :) let us know your findings.
