I had a chat with a dell rep tonight through their website and I asked about the possibility of the release of a 1425 lineup and also about possible post-xmas promos. I converted the rep's name in case she said more than she should have.

DellRep: Thank you for holding and I appreciate your patience. My name is blah I'll be your personal sales agent. How may I help you with your purchase?
Kevin: I am considering getting an inspiron 1420 and ive read that a 1425 is soon to be released
Kevin: and im wondering if youd have any knowledge of that
DellRep: as of now we still don't have any advise for that.
DellRep: but as soon as the system is available will let you know.
Kevin: do you at least know if its a true rumor?
DellRep: I really haven't heard about it until now.
Kevin: from what i've read, the changes aren't likely to be big, so i just want to know if it's even worth waiting for or just ordering now
Kevin: i do have another question
Kevin: right now, i'm able to get 300 dollars off using a coupon and 150 dollar gift card and im wondering if there might be even better deals after xmas
Kevin: i dont know if they tell you any of these things
DellRep: or promos goes on and off so there a possibility for that. :)
Kevin: is this possibility maybe something that i should strongly consider waiting for
    DellRep: the 1425?
Kevin: or better promos for the 1420
    DellRep: yes definitely :)
Kevin: might you know of a time frame i should keep in mind?
DellRep: I can't give yo the exact timeframe because we don't have any advise for that either but as soon as we have we'll let you know. Please bear in out site for that.
Kevin: ok ill keep an eye on the site
    DellRep: ;)

The "yes definitely" from her seemed weird to me, as if she knows more than she's saying. I don't know, I could be reading more into this than I should. How do you guys interpret this?

Computers always get better and cheaper. You don't need a Dell rep to tell you that.

With CES and Macworld just around the corner, along with Intel's release of the Penryn, anybody wanting a laptop should absolutely wait a few more weeks.

    Yeah, Lithus is right.

We'll see that the future has for us soon. The new year is just around the corner and that's when they bring out the shiny new toys usually - in my books.

IMHO...Computer technology is CONSTANTLY changing. If and when the 1525/1425 is released, I'm sure rumors will start to surface about another NEWER, BETTER MODEL. At the rate technology is growing you can keep on sitting and waiting for the next best thing and you'll never get around to buying a new laptop. There are plenty of great machines out there now, trying to anticipate technology or future proof a PC is just wasting time....

MAC5217, that's so true. Heres a good example, a few people I know that are big gamers are FINALLY getting 8800 graphics cards. Just now they are installing them and enjoying them, thinking there future proof for years to come. Meanwhile the 9 Series are due in 2 - 6 weeks LMFAO.

    It's a endless circle.

Only thing is HDMI which would've been far easier to hook stuff up than a VGA cable + 3.5mm cable to RCA cable.

I agree, but in this instance we know for a fact that a next-generation Intel laptop chip is being released in just a couple of weeks.

My guess is that the 1425's will cost more to buy anyway. Look at the price difference of the 1420's when they first came out and and the price for it now. I just ordered a 1420, if it has the screen/audio problem like most people, it's going back to Dell.

I understand that technology is constantly changing, but it isn't always the case that in 2-3 weeks, there will be an upgrade to a model of laptop I've had my eye on for months. So, that logic isn't helpful. After this 2-3 weeks, however, the 1400 line isn't likely to be updated again for many months. So, I think that Simic is right and that waiting that few more weeks would be a wise move.

Anyone want to try this line of questioning again now that the 1525s are out?

All I could see them doing is adding HDMI and any internal changes that might be necessary to support the Penryn processors (although Penryn may not even require any hardware changes). Since there's no 14" XPS model, they won't be shedding the dedicated graphics and powerful CPUs in order to make it thinner and lighter.

I wouldn't want a 1425 if they cripple it like they did the 1525 by taking away the dedicated video card.
