    price of memory inflated during config stage

    Why is the price of memory inflated during the configuration stage of ordering a dell laptop?
    -1GB, DDR SDRAM Memory (2 DIMMS) [add $499]

    but if you were to purchase it under software and peripherals it costs:
    - 512 MB DDR SDRAM, PC2100 ($162.95)

    Will Dell allow you to purchase 2 512's separately (not installed) when ordering a laptop? Does it make more sense to do it that way? and will they even allow you to do that?

    They charge you more because they can. People are generally afraid to do their own upgrades and don't know they can go to www.crucial.com and buy for 50% less. With Dell, always buy the minimum then get a second card from Crucial.

    Does installing memory from another vendor negate Dells warranty in any way?

    No, installing your own memory should not void your warranty. However, if something should go wrong with the actually memory chip, then obviously Dell would not be responsible. Just make sure to use compatbile memory type. (Which Crucial.com can help you with)

    And heck, if something ever did happen to your computer, just put back the old memory and then give Dell a call![ :)]
