    hi!
I bought dell inspiron n5110 about a week ago and I have a problem with the speakers..
they are working (producing sound) but they are producing this noise, like I have turned the volume to maximum on a bad quality speakers (like those old radios).. not sure how to explain it, but it's happening even if the speakers are set to 20% of the volume..
I tried reinstalling the drivers and codecs, but nothing helped.. it's not associated with the program I use for listening to music or with the loudness of the speakers..

any idea what this could be?

    thank you for your answer!

Does this also happen if you connect external speakers or headphones?

Is the sound muffled? or staticy (if that is a word)
If it is muffled it may help proping up the machine since I read the speakers fire downwards in a review on this site.
If it is static, it may be a bad internal connection, can you get to the speakers easily for a visual inspection?

don't have external speakers to connect (sorry), but it didn't happen when I connected the headphones... so far... maybe it would happen after a while... but so far, no.. no problem with the headphones plugged in... :/

sound isn't muffled, it's more like this staticy you mentioned.. it's like cracking and buzzing at the same time..
unfortunately, I can't inspect the speakers visually and I can't open up my laptop cause I'll loose my warranty.. :(
I will take the laptop to the official vendor but it's not in my hometown, so I'll have to send it there.. but since I don't know what could be the problem, I'm not sure if there is any point taking it to the service or if I should just try to replace it right away.. :/

I would wait out for another owner to add to this, There was a issue like this with some ASUS model that was fixed via software, I hope this is the case for you!

    thank you so much!
I hope someone will have more ideas and suggestions and I'll try to find similar threads here...
I sure hope it's software related since the laptop is virtually new, had it for 10 days..

Do you have the IDT drivers installed? In the IDT control panel if SRS is turned on there are a few options you can tweak, some of them make the sound on my laptop sound like you are describing.

I uninstalled the IDT app and let windows install its own HD sound driver and it is far better. No matter what i tried to do with the IDT app installed the sound quality was rubbish.

yes, I have IDT drivers... when SRS is turned on, the sound is terrible.. I switched it off (and then later uninstalled the IDT drivers) but it didn't help.. it's making the same noise even with the default sound driver...

Hi, I've got the same problem as well on my Dell N5110 bought just a couple of weeks ago. As Noodlemantra described, the sound from the speaker is muffled, even though the volume is low. Please do let me know if you've got a solution to the problem. Thanks!

Did you try plugging in external speakers? Defective speakers isn't a non-rare occurrence on the new Inspiron line.

no, because I don't have external speakers, but I plugged the headphones and didn't have any problems... (as I already wrote)
since I didn't know what else to do (after reinstalling all the audio drivers and codecs), I tried reinstalling the windows again and it didn't help...
does this mean that there is a physical problem with the speakers?

the guy at the shop where I bought the laptop told me that I would get a new one if the problem couldn't be fixed... but if this problem is common on all of the Inspiron models, would getting a new laptop (same model) help?

Yes you need to RMA to Dell or ask them to ship speakers to you.

Who said you would get a new one...? All you need is to have the speakers replaced.

I bought the laptop in Croatia, so I don't have anything to do with Dell directly... all of the repairs and changes made on the laptop are done through the company I bought the laptop from, so they said I would get a new one if they can't fix/replace the speakers...

but what's the point in replacing the speakers if all of the Inspiron speakers have the same problem??

They all don't have an issue, it is just a common issue.

I too have this computer and have had it since May. I have tried installing new drivers from Microsoft and Dell but it does not fix the problem. I tried to unistall the driver and allow Windows to install their own driver with a reboot, but it still does not fix the problem. Another issue I just discovered today is that only one of my internal speakers are working. Unless, as was noted, one of the speakers is for beeps while turning on the machine.

ok, so.. two people here have the same problem as I do.. I guess there are others that have it too... I know that laptops have weaker speakers than desktop computers but the last two laptops I had (Asus and Toshiba) didn't have THIS problem.. I'd say it's a common issue with this model and somehow doubt that replacing the speakers would help... but I'll ask for a replacement... since I have the warranty, there is no harm in asking..

thank you for all of your help, at least now I know I'm not the only one with this problem..

Let me tell you, at my workplace we sell plenty of 15R. This problem isn't "uncommon" but I have maybe shipped out 4 Inspiron 15R over the course of 1 year due to defective speakers, and I have probably serviced 500+ 15R. More often than not we get them in for bad hard drives (#1 failure of ALL computer manufacturers), bad keyboards/palmrest (pretty common Dell problem), AC adapters (all manufacturers). The 15R 4th most common problem? Speakers. But again it is a numbers game, statistics.

I just got off of chat with Dell and they are sending out a technician to replace my speakers and fix any necessary problems.

Purchased a new dell n5110 on 27th,October-2011 from Dubai. Am facing the exact same problem. The sound from the internal speakers as well as from the headphones has this popping and clicking.

Have not yet tried replacing the idt audio drivers with the generic windows 7 ones.

But as has been already mentioned on this forum, changing to the generic windows audio driver has not helped other users with the same problem.
Will still try and let you know what happens.

If everyone out there is facing this problem surely Dell must also know about it.
Why are they not recalling this model?
If any one knows what to do please let us know.
    Thanks.

For it to be a recall, it pretty much has to be a major safety issue. In the 500+ 1_R I've had to service, I've had maybe 2-3 have bad speakers, most common issues are bad drives, bad palmrest/touchpad/keyboard, and AC adapters.

My N5110 has a similar problem too. The right speaker distorts like hell, the other one is fine, for now at least.

With external speakers or headphones there are no problems.

I'm gonna send this thing back and hopefully get a L502x. `

If your speaker making an annoying beep like sound continuously but your head phones are working fine then check IDT settings in IDT Control Panel. Open IDT control panel from control panel section and select Microphone array in top bar. If Listen to this device is checked then unchecked it. Hopefully it will solve your problem :) at least it works for me

I have same problem, and I checked it by external speakers they work fine.
I think they used low quality speakers or they did not set proper power matching speakers as when I touched panel upside of speaker , it was hot.
May I know dell offers speakers warranties too ?

I have same prob, my speaker sounds like speaker wall broken.
Please guide can I claim warranty on this issue?

Just call up Dell's support, any piece that was shipped out with your notebook is covered by the standard warranty.

Dell as far as I know will not ship warranty CRU parts to customer's home for consumer grade laptops, which means you will need to take it to your local repair shop for a warranty claim or directly ship it to Dell. OR you could replace them yourself if you wanted to pay $$$. If it's under warranty just call up Dell Support or chat with them.
