So I bought a 1520 way back in August. I wasn't exactly overjoyed with it when I received it, but I didn't even open it until after the 21 day return period (I was out of town) so returning it was not an option. It had the CPU whine and headphone jack noise, along with the grainy screen. All things that I could live with, even if I wasn't too happy with them.

Now, however, the thing seems to be completely falling apart. My DVD drive has stopped working, I can't connect to the internet on a consistent basis, and the hard drive is clicking. Add that to the fact that the processor is always noisily running at full speed, and the computer has become virtually unusable. My question is, if I call Dell, will they let me send in the computer and get a replacement? Or will I just get replacement parts to fix it? Also, if I can get a replacement, is there a return policy with that? As in, can I return the replacement and get a refund?

    Thanks!

Honestly theres nothing you can do, send it to depot, and they'll fix/replace it. That's it.

On a side note, hard drive clicking is normal.. all my external 2.5" drives do it.. YOU SHOULD want it to, because that means the functionally of it locking when it's being dropped is working.

Otherwise it seems like you were the one in a dozen to get a lemon, Dell will take care of it and compensate you for your troubles. They always make everything right.

Well... you have to read the warranty you bought with the computer. First they will try to fix the parts (cost less money to them), unless the problem is so big (or too many problems) they will replace it. But at least all Dell computers get the 1 year warranty, so everything is covered for you.

I think (and I am not so sure) that the replacement will not have a refund... since its a replacement. Otherwise said: if you got only the 1 year warranty, you have only 1 year since you bought it, not since the replacement is sent.

    I hope this helps.

I have the three year warranty, with the two year accidental damage plan (or something like that, the middle warranty option when you're buying the computer). So that shouldn't be a problem.

If you have at home service, don't send it in. Call and ask for repair is all you can do at this point. They are not going to take back 3 months old laptop for a refund.

The 21 day thing you missed out on is your personal problem anyways right?

Returning for a full refund without any restocking and shipping fees is not an option but returning for replacment or repair is still an option. Remember, in case of replacement, you will be provided with a refurbished system as you are out of the 21 day period.

Yes. Remember, in case of replacement, you will be provided with a refurbished system as you are out of the 21 day period.

It all depends on the issues you are facing and the best way it could be resolved. Sometimes you are asked to send the system for a replacement, sometimes it is for repairing the system and sometimes the system is repaired on-site. Remember, in case of replacement, you will be provided with a refurbished system as you are out of the 21 day period.

Only a representative from Dell or a user who has experienced the above issue or an NBR expert can answer this question.

I don't think the strategy of returning the replacement refurbished system for a full refund minus restocking and shipping fees (as you can't return the original system for full refund minus restocking and shipping fees) will work!
