1530 - Older, and will be phased out eventually. Right now there are limited choices with the 1530 on dell.com. One being color choice: Promise Pink! ;)
But, a strong all around laptop..Good for Gaming, multi-media etc.. :)
(I have it and I still stand by it's awesome capabilities).
1530 the Nvidia GPU (8400, 8600)..has known problems...But Dell added the one year warranty extension on it! So keep that in mind.

The Studio 15 - Is still what I consider a *newer* lappy.
It's a good one, and is also a nice Multi Media lappy.
Comes with many lid color choices, good batt' life, Great pricing

The 1530 weighs: 5.9lbs, the S15 weight: 6lbs ~ Nearly the same! The XPS line has great Customer Support.

Here is helpful thread I found for you to peruse:
Dell XPS 1530 vs. Studio 15 - It's driving me nuts
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=304581

    and, a more current one:
    XPS M1530 or Studio 15
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=363651

Also, if you were looking for a good deal on either then just dell.com, consider a purchase at the Outlet! :) Great savings, and still very good lappys!

    Hope that helps!

    Cin ;) :)

    Your welcome! :D
If you are going to go with the 1530...I don't know if you want that Promise Pink color in a lid....I think the Outlet would be a nice option for you.
(Really on either). ;) You can always go the e-bay route to ~ I just prefer purchasing from Dell.

And, have you considered the SXPS 16, at all? :)

    Cin ;) :)

The XPS M1530 is a performance-oriented laptop, made for gaming and other high-demand stuff, although it's now slowly being phased out.

The Studio 15 is a multimedia laptop, ideal for music, HD movies, and the like, and maybe some occasional light gaming. Based on newer technology.

Sorry, I thought the m1530 came with a Nvidia 8400 or 8600? Not quite sure what you are asking?

If you are asking if the graphics are upgradable, on that I'm not sure. In all likelihood you cannot upgrade the GPU as with most notebooks - but wait for someone else to confirm this.

In any case, do not focus on the size of the video ram available - as long as it has at least 128MB. Instead you should focus on:

Memory bus width: For better gaming look for 128bit or 256bit (preferably 256). 64bit bus width will still manage, but it will struggle

Memory type: Note this is not the amount of memory, but the type. It is preferable for the GPU to have access to it's own vRAM, ideally you are looking for GDDRx over DDRx.

Core / Shader / Memory Speed: The faster the better on each one of these. Preferably something over 500MHz/500MHz/600MHz

Then, and only then do you worry about the amount of vRAM.

Of course, it all depends on how much gaming, and what games you are going to play, as to how rigidly you need to stick to the above. My Inspiron laptop (in signature) has a HD 4330 which is 64bit bus / 450MHz/450MHz/600MHz GDDR3 256MB. This does not perform well in some games, like for example Crysis (which I had to try out on the machine for a benchmark) is not playable in anything but low-medium settings at medium resolution. However, it is perfectly capable at playing some other games (HL2,FarCry1) at full settings, and even some games like COD4 it plays at moderate settings.

OK, but everything I said above is still true; try almost to ignore the MB for graphics cards. That only gets more important when you are getting to the 256bit performance cards.

OK, I've done a little searching and found this thread:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=311375

Which says that the GPU supplied in the XPS M1530 is not soldered to the motherboard so could be upgraded. However, Dell GPUs are typically in their own proprietary modular format, which means you can only upgrade to another that was made specifically for that machine. So I believe you could upgrade to a 8600M GT, but you'd need to do the upgrade yourself if they are not offering that any longer; plus wasn't there a problem with that GPU? I forget.

Anyway, short answer is, if you can't get the GPU that you want in a Dell machine from Dell specifically, then in all likelihood you cannot upgrade.

I'd suggest you start by thinking about what you want from the machine before making a purchase.

You can always check the Outlet for this, too.
As stated above, on dell.com..the only choice now for the 1530, the color is *Promise Pink*

And, Fragile is right...make sure you know what you want! Have you thought of checking out the SXPS 1640? The Studio 15, is still very nice! :)

I just did a quick check of the 1530 availi at the Outlet..wowsa, only 1!
