Hi, I am about to buy my first notebook. I am looking at lots of 15.4 laptops, but I like the dell e1705. I have a q, is the 17 at that weight very hard to bring around. I won't be doing it much, mostly desktop replacement, but it will travel once and a while. Is it that much of a hastle? Otherwise, it is a great notebook for the price.

It should be fine. Its only 8.1lbs, and for a 17inch desktop replacement, it is not bad at all.

Do you have any more questions on it?

17" in indeed big, not really recommended if you're moving alot with it, even if its 8lbs, the powerbar, etc. will be at least 11-12lbs.

Yeah that's pretty light for a 17' notebook considering I own an ASUS Z81sp which comes in at about 9.5 pounds and after I add in the power brick and external mouse, it can easily come out to be 14 pounds.

I would suggest a good pull behind case if carry weight is an issue. I have a pull behind notebook case that came with my notebook and I have no probs what so ever hauling my beast around. Just make sure that you get a case that's well designed so that your notebook don't bounce around too much.

Yes, my Dell 8600 15.4 inch weighs 7.6 pounds i believe. Which is not that different at all. When i get mine, ill hardly notice a weight difference, but of course get the feel of what a 17 inch notebook is like.

They do make lighter 17inch notebooks, as the W2j is one. But for 8lbs, you still cant go wrong with that, as being a desktop replacement.

I'd say point to point carrying is OK, but if you are taking it around all day, it will feel like an anchor.

Consider it this way. (I am a fan of small laptops mind you). Your backpack filled with notebooks and binders can weigh as much as 15 pounds. When you replace these books with a laptop and only a few books, you wont be able to tell the difference, except your laptop takes up far less space.

Only problems will be the wideness of the 17" beast and handheld portability.

As long as you get a bag that fits it, you should have no problem. I have a backpack for mine, and I take it to school with me 3 days a week, and if anyone's ever been to Michigan State, it's a LOOOONG walk from one end of campus to the other. But I have no problem with carrying that and books, so I don't see why it would be a problem for you.

Of course, I guess I used to carry a 50+ lb rucksack every day, so I am probably just used to it

    ... Listen to this guy

I have the E1705 with Two Batteries (One as a Backup) and I take it to every class M-F at my University. I live off campus and walk to class and Yes if you lug it around for 10 hours straight it would get annoying. However if youre just gonna be taking it around with you from time to time, NO Problem. If you are gonna take it on trips say on a Plane or something this Thing is AUSOME for watching DVD's On a long flight! But as the last guy said get a good backpack, this is the only problem I have with my laptop is I have a 90 Dollar Dakine Backpack for school and I have to stuff my laptop in this thing and I can get maybe 1 book and a notebook, THATS IT! So get a good backpack or Sleeve bag that will accomadate a 17" and you are set. Besides carrying it around THIS LAPTOP IS SO FRICKEN AMAZING!
