would the driver for my 7800GT for my desktop work?
-
You should be able to download the driver just right off of dells site. However, dells drivers are usually quite crappy and I'd recommend getting some other better drivers. Check out the drivers from tweaksrus.com. They should be called something like X-treme G drivers.
-
If you go with stock drivers, then there is a possiblity that you will have display problems. Mainly your LCD will not turn off when you close the lid. If that is something that you care about, then you'll need to go to support.dell.com and select drivers/downloads. It will ask you for your service tag number or you can manually select the system.
Once you get to the drivers page, go to the Video Card driver (down at the very bottom).
It should be on the driver's disc but it might not have a checkmark around it. It is listed under Video card drivers but there is a possibility that you didn't get the disc to match your laptop. In the left hand column, you should be able to choose your laptop and a list of drivers will pop up for it. -

whats the correct chipset and wireless driver? (Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 Internal Wireless and Bluetooth )
and then can I get a list of all the drivers you think I need? I have a short list of options I got on the notebook:
17" 17 inch Ultra SharpTM WUXGA with TrueLifeTM 1920 x 1200 pixels (my 19" desktop doesn't have that much resolution)
Intel® Core Duo Processor T2400 (1.83GHz/667MHz FSB)
1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz
Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 Internal Wireless and Bluetooth
256MB NVIDIA® GeForce Go 7900 GS
Integrated Sound Blaster® Audigy HD Software Edition
also, I never messed with a wireless setup before. I know hardware pretty good but never messed with setting up connections that much. can I get a simple walk though?
I know I am asking a lot and I appreciate all the help guys. -
Since you have Intel, it will be pretty easy. Once you go to the location of the hot spot, make sure that your wifi is on (second light from the right on the series of lights near your MD or power button).
then you'll go to start-->programs-->intel proset wireless-->in the avialable networks box (second box that has a list of wifi available for use)-->double click on it and enter a profile name of your choice (i.e. library, home, Starbucks, etc). Then, click next. If the wifi is secured or requires you to enter a SSID, it will ask you for it on the next couple of pages.
That disc that is coming to you should have the necessary drivers. I don't know why dell is having such a big problem with this, but I've helped out a ton of users that don't have the right disc. -

well the thing is that I leave for Indiana wednesday morning. my unit is being deployed and Indiana is the train up base. I woudl like everything working when I leave and I am not 100% sure the disk will be here by tuesday.

also, they said they charged for the disk, but gave me some kind of free battery. what kind of battery, for the notebook? anyone ever heard of this before?
-
You can do what was suggested with the hotspot. If you can get your network driver installed, then go to starbucks or somwhere that has a hot spot, and download the drivers that you need.
They shouldn't be charging for the disc. The disc is suppose to be free. I'm not sure about the battery though. I would assume that it is probably a spare battery. -

do you know the drivers I need? there were two options for the chipset, I didn't see one for the wireless card unless its the broadband card, and there were like..... 25 for the display.
nevermind I think I found the wireless card under network.....DUH lol
and idea what DVD burner I have? at the time I think i was the free upgrade one, but I see a few choices. -

ok neverminf again. one chipset link is for the actual chipset and the other is for the mem card slots and stuff. I think I got it all now. if this dosen't work I'll be back later lol

are you talking about the drivers listed on support.dell.com? Here is a list of drivers that you need: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=1493615&postcount=3
It will tell you which are optional and which are mandatory. Without knowing the specific hardware that you have (ie which cd/dvd drive) I can't really tell you which driver you need.
Dell has several different manufacturers for each device, so that is why we need to know who made your drive, which networking device you have, etc. -

I was talking about the link I posted earlier: http://support.dell.com/support/dow...s=gen&SystemID=INS_PNT_P4_9400&os=WW1&osl=EN#
thats suppose to be the driver page for the e1705 and 9400 -
Yes it is. I was just giving a link that tells you which drivers are mandatory and which are optional in case you weren't sure of the ones that you needed. Most only have once choice as you probably already know. Plus the link i gave you tells you the necessary software that you need to install (such as Notebook System Software).

go with the nvidea site and thats it

ok the wireless driver is a no go. its 37Mb. been trying to download for 18 hours now but no luck , I keep getting disconnected after 3-4 hours. is there an english only version of it? I know that with video drivers that the english only version is about half the size fo the full version.
-
get the wireless driver off of the disc. I did a couple of walk throughs last night with some different users, and I figured out that Dell is labelling the driver's disc different. Most of the drivers on that disc matched thier system, but they were also missing the video card driver. We were able to get everything installed by using the disc and then going to the website to get the X1400 driver.
I don't know why dell is doing this, but they've started putting MCX*** instead of E1505 or whatever system you have. -

well all of this turned out tp be uncessary. long story shot, I went to a pool party and a friend steped on a yellow jacket so I gave him a ride home in exchange fro letting me use his PC to let me get the sound, vid, and wireless driver. I had already downloaded the chipset and system software because it wasn't that big of a file, plus a few drivers that were compatible on the driver disk. still have 2 thing without drivers though. after I installed the audio driver I now get a device without a driver called modem device on high definition audio bus. I tried to install the audigy software to see if that woudl take care of it but it didn't. what driver do I need for this? also have one called BCM2045. whats that?

also, I am installing 3dmark05 pro from the cd. still having the same problem I had when I ffirst gfot the notebook. it takes FOREVER to install anythign from a cd or dvd. its taken about 5 mineuts to just install 3dmark. I have no clue whats causing this. CPU usage never goes about 11% while its installing and it only used about 20MB of ram at the same time.
-
5 minutes doesn't sound so bad. I don't recall how long it took me to install 3dmark05...
