My 8600 is due to arrive today, and as I am really not interested in all the preloaded software that will be on it, is it possible to reformat the drive and reload XP only on it with the DELL supplied disks?

Also, I would like to do the same to my yeard old desktop that has alot of junk software and spyware on it, would the process be the same for both? Would I need to reinstall drivers separately?

The last Dell I re-installed had only one disc, but that was a few years ago. XP should have most of the drivers for you pc. The ones it does not should be available on Dell's website. If you can get your hands on a XP disc, Microsoft will activate for you over the phone as long as you have a legal copy of the original. They used to let you activate over the internet, but yesterday was the last day for that. Good Luck.

The 8600 should come with an xp cd (dell branded) as well as a driver cd. I know mine did when I got mine about a year ago.

I also dont like the default built in software. Does anyone know if the Inspiron 6000 comes with a clean XP CD without any of the add on crap or just a recovery CD?

Its really easy to do I had to do it to 4 computers of winter break this year.

1.) turn on your pc and press f8(or whatever key is prompted) to enter setup mode.
2.) in setup mode switch the boot settings to boot from cd first
3.) Put the xp cd in the drive and restart your computer
4.) the xp cd should boot up into an all blue with grey/white text screen not sure of the exact text but your gonna wanna look for something that says to format partition and install win xp (there are two partitions on your dell usually one backup and c:, make sure you select partition c: for formating and install)

that should be all you need to do minus adding back all the drivers for things like the graphics card and wireless card(if you have one)
