well guys and gals, i know this topic has been discussed to death in this forum but i just wanted everyone's opinion. Screen issues are so hard because its very subjective depending on the user. Ok so I got my shiny new inspiron 6400 a few days ago and i immediately noticed that sort of shimmer/shiny/grainy thing that everyone keeps talking about on here. oh yeah i have a WXGA+ 15.4" widescreen display, thought it would be a good compromise b/w WSXGA and WXGA. My LCD manufacturer is AU optronics.

So the shimmer isn't really THAT bad but the thing is, it IS annoying and noticeable sometimes, especially on white screens. The viewing angle isn't bad, it's not perfect but i can usually get a good angle. On videos i do notice some graininess but im not sure what that's from...even high definition ones. So in the end the question was I do have the option of contacting dell and getting another one but.....there's no sure way of getting a certain screen from what i've read correct?? and even if there was some people think samsung is bad while others love it and same with LG.

I do live in the DFW area though where the first dell store was made in northpark mall. In my mind the best options are call them and see what they can do and then ask about getting it replaced at the store because in all honesty i really do not want to go through the hassle of sending it through mail and then worrying the whole time about dents/scratches/cracks and dell not caring about that. Im sorry about the long post and any opinions and advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

I don't think they are likely to do it at the store.

they will not do it at the store but if you call them, raise a stink they will replace it tell them you want a lg or samsung with lg being the one of choice
by the way my 1405 had the au optronics and it was really grainy they sent me a samsung and its like daylight and dark only prob is i have a very small amount of light leakage on bottom corner but not enough to cause problems.
at this point i am quite happy with the samsung and installation was not at all bad :)

Yeah, they aren't going to do it at the store. The store only contains sales people only.

As for the screen, it kind of depends on your warranty and when you bought your laptop. If you are in your 21 day period, you should be able to get a new screen with very little trouble but you won't be able to choose what it is. If you are after the 21 day return period, you can probably get it replaced under your warranty coverage but generally that only happens when the LCD fails. You might be able to play, "i'm totally unhappy with this screen" card and try to convince Dell that the screen is bad, and with any luck they will replace.

ok thanks for the input everyone! i only thought about the store thing because i chatted up a few of the employees and they said they have tech guys in the back and if anything on one of their laptops goes wrong you can bring it in and they will see what they can do, now that doesn't mean that they won't have to wait for a part or even mail it in themselves but still i can ask.

Ok so im in the 21 day period so if i raise hell about it will they come and replace or will i have to send it in? and does anyone have any clue about what causes light leakage? is it a property of the lcd itself or the way they actually mount it? I'm fixing to call dell right now so i will try to keep everyone updated.

well, i got off the phone with them a while back and instead of getting a replacement screen and having someone install etc. they just decided to send me a new one. Now the thing that doesn't really make sense is they're gonna send me the exact same thing as i have now or so he said, hopefully though the LCD manufacturer will not be the same and I won't have any problems because i've read some people having some problems with things like this before i.e. not getting the same laptop for an exchange. I brought up getting a replacement LCD with the tech guy but not the customer service guy.......
