    replacement motherboard question

    I've got an INspiron 600m. The motherboard is a Y8639 model. Does anybody know if I can replace this with a different model number or is it necessary to find a Y8639 for replacement? I'm having a hard time finding this particular model as opposed to other more available motherboards that were used in the 600m.

    You can use any motherboard from the 600M or the D600 (any of the various models numbers are fine - don't get caught up on the model number). Motherboards from the 500M and D500 will also work, but they won't support the three media buttons above the keyboard.

    If you get a D600 motherboard, I do believe you can flash a 600M BIOS (such that it doesn't say D600 in BIOS or whatever), but I have never verified this myself.
