Yes, you can replace the hard drive. I did it with my 9300 without any problems.
-
Yes you can upgrade the hard drive, currently I believe the largest laptop drive is only 100 gigabytes. It might be more cost effective for him to just buy an external hard drive either notebook sized drive or a desktop sized external drive where you can get a really large capacity of say 250 to 300 gigabytes for the same price you would pay for a new laptop hard drive of 100 gig capacity. An external drive would use a USB port

You can take the old hard drive and put it in a case for extra storage or backups.

Just a USB port? Easy for you guys to say with 6 of them! lol
Here's the user guide from dell on how to remove it

note that you will need an external power source if u decide to go with a 3.5" drive instead of a 2.5" drive

-
But we can't go SATA on the 9300 right?
-
I just looked at some external drives at best buy, the normal 3.5 inch external drives will offer you a much larger capacity and a better price than the 2.5 inch drives will.
-
Not as portable though.

sorry for replying so much later but i heard that external drives wear out a lot faster like if i was to use it to store all my music for itunes and whatnot
not sure just what i heard
