    Hi,

I'm seriously disappointed with the TSSTcorp DVD writer that came in my 1737, it coasters more DVD's than any drive I've used in the past (3 our of 5 burns fail and Dell support are, as usual, hopeless) so I'm looking to replace the drive with a better one (sony maybe?) would any slot-loading SATA drive fit?

    Thanks

I'm assuming that the ODD may have an SATA connector since it is a new model. Many of the DVD burning problems with the Dell E series Latitudes were fixed by installing the latest Intel Matrix storage driver / software. So try that and check for any firmware update for your burner.

If you are getting 60% failed burns (and I presume that you have tried several different brands of media) then you should be asking Dell for a replacement. Another route is to contact the Samsung optical drive support.

When you have reached the ends of those options, you can fit any burner with the right thickness (9.5mm or 12.7mm) and interface connector (PATA or SATA). The instructions are here. You can check the specs for your current burner if you have the model number.
