Can I remove the battery if the laptop is plugged in?

    Yes. Read the battery guide.

To preserve the battery. The heat from the laptop will degrade the battery more quickly than if it is disconnected.

The problem with disconnecting it is that if the cable comes unplugged, it turns off instantly.

I'd happily pay $100 for a new battery after a year or two, to not have to remove the battery 200 times a year or worry about degradation.

It would make sense for the people that rarely bring their laptops with them anywhere and just leave it at their desk. Otherwise, it wouldn't be worth it to take it out every time you get home.

I've thought about the same thing, but it's fine just staying in.

yah I did that a couple of times (to preserve battery as well) but it's such a pain in the butt when the plug comes out from the wall accidentally and the laptop shuts down. Not worth saving a couple months worth of battery life (if even that) IMO

I personally leave mine out,and store it in the fridge until I need to take my notebook along with me.But with this you can lose data if your in the middle of something and it comes unplugged.

Storing it in the fridge? Never heard of that one. And I doubt it does anything except keep the battery cool. (Doubling as an ice-pack maybe? :) )

Yeah, I think some of you guys have lost your minds!

Maybe I should start wrapping mine in aluminum foil and put it in a cryogenic freezer to make sure it will last when I take it out in 2025.

I mean, seriously your battery will/should last the as long as you have your laptop (~4 years) unless you charge/discharge it 25 times per day.....

Yeah I agree. It will obviously degrade over time, so just remember 2 things:

    1) If your laptop is stationary (at home), take the battery out.
    2) Never run it down to below 10-20%.

Thats all ye need to know.

The refrigerator helps. There is an ongoing chemical reaction in the battery. By cooling the battery, the reaction is slowed, thereby slowing down the degradation of the battery.

I have a battery in the refrigerator because I own two but only use the second one on trips every so often.

I've always kept my alkaline batteries in the fridge to keep them fresh ;) but this tread got me wondering if that was just urband legend. I Googled the topic, and it seems that keeping them cold does extend the shelf life, but only by about 4 to 5%. Also, you should let them warm up again before using them. I'll probably continue to keep them cool.. at least I always know where they are.

I never pull mine out because what if the power dips or something. I had some power flickers and I didn't even know the power was out until I realized that I couldn't access any of the external drives then noticed the lights were not on. The battery kicked in as soon as the ac power died.

Everyone knows that putting something in the fridge keeps it fresh! The freezer is even better!

An alternative method would be to soak it in pickling spices, oil and vinegar...then no refrigeration is required.

Yeah, I try to preserve my battery the best I can because one day it would make a great museum piece :)

Jeff, great advantage of keeping your batteries in a fridge - at least you know where to find them: "After 2 hours of searching for my batteries the idea came to my mind - maybe they are in the fridge? No!! Why would I be so stupid to put them there?"

    :)

I also don't like keeping the battery charged when I'm on AC power. But unfortunately Dell put one of the rubber tabs on the battery itself!! the rest (x3) are on the laptop base. So whenever the battery is removed, the base becomes very uneven and rocks back and forth.

Many HP models used to have the same problem. Now when batteries are smaller and slimmer they don't have to be situated in the corners but at the back or at the front.

The reason I was asking is that, when I surf the net and stuff while lying in bed, the laptop heats up much faster because its:

    - not on a flat surface
    - the surface (mattress and stuff) tends to retain heat

I figured it will kill the battery fast, so the only time I take out the battery is in this situation. Otherwise, not worth the trouble.
