Is it safe to use my vostro while im on the bed i.e sitting on the lap. My previous laptop would overheat and there would be black marks around the touchpad, will it be safe especially as they are no longer called laptops (which were safe to put in ur lap) to notebooks?

Depends on if you want to sterilize yourself. The heat may not be good for the reproductive system.

I use my 1500 all the time on my lap. Just try and not cover the bottom fan vent with your leg and it will stay nice and cool.

I own a 1700 and frequently use it on my lap. I don't think anything bad will happen but I'll have to find out in 10 years or so.

No it's not. If you look at the bottom of your laptop you will see rubber 'foots' (at least on mine), this raises the laptop enough so that the fans can still pull air in.

I have a wooden chess board that is just a bit bigger than a 15" laptop that i put the laptop on while it's on my lap. even gives me a bit of room for my mouse.

Something similar could help. might be more comfortable and stable. Always good for heat reduction.

if it's just on your lap/blanket or whatever, just don't do it for hours. maybe 1-1/2 at most. give it some time to cool down.

I use a tray with folding legs, the type used for eating in bed. It also gives me room to use a separate mouse.

I'm sure it's fine as long as you're not playing games or anything that will make the CPU and/or GPU quite hot. ;)
