Yeah Windows Media Center is a variant of XP that's aimed towards people building computers for use as home entertainment systems.

No they are not, but both of them are full screen media applications with similar features and GUI (Windows Media Center looking little bit better and having more features like TV tuner support, XBOX connectivity, etc.). On the other hand MediaDirect has two modes, the Windows application (run on top of the host OS like media center) and a special mode booted by the dedicated MD button.

There was a special XP OS called Windows XP Media Center edition, however Vista home premium and Ultimate also have Media Center application bundled.
