Hi,
Is there any mobo related or other technical limitation keeping Dell from using santa rosa in the M1210?
I am looking for a small gaming laptop like M1210 with Geforce 8M or mobility Radeon HD 2000 card coupled with santa rosa.
Is there any reason why this cant be done in the near future? I need to buy a laptop in May or June
thanks,
-
I don't see why not. It should be out soon.

Santa rosa is not just the new Core 2 Duo (800MHz FSB) processor; it is a platform, which also includes a new chipset (965 Express). Current M1210 has 945 express chipset which doesn't support the new processor, therefore it requires a new motherboard.
I’m sure DELL will come up with a Centrino Pro 12” notebook very soon, hopefully with a Geforce 8 series gfx card. But still no one knows whether they'll call it M1210 or whether they'll use the same design. -

Santa Rosa will come out when the balance between loss of old inventory cuts into overall sales due to other manufacturers already selling Santa Rosa platforms. There are people who get paid at Dell who tell Dell exactly when to execute the delivery of Santa Rosa dells. Dell is realizing they need better looking laptops, and they are also redisning their Inspirons, which may add to the delay (or not, they could be done with that too).
So it depends on when they get rid of their old stock and when their new designs are ready.
Mostly, the M1210, I would surmise, will not get a body update. They will simply stick a new Santa Rosa mobo & CPU into it and call it a M1211 or something. -
-
Well dell just came out with a big discount on new M1210's so it looks like there might be a model change, or at the least santa rosa is coming out very quickly
-
I hope it come out soon, ive been holding off since last November for dx10 cards and santa rosa, cant wait past june. It dosnt make too much sense for a performance/gaming oriented line to not have the latest video cards for too long.
My biggest fear is in the event that Dell abandons the 12 inch xps and go to a 14 inch setup like everyone else. the 12 inch form factor + performance is the biggest reason why I'm going with Dell. -
hopefully they will come out by July -
That discount on current M1210's has me tempted to buy now. I too have been waiting for a Santa Rosa refresh of the M1210 since March. I better wait a little longer so I don't wish I had the newer technology in a couple months.
I just wish we had some confirmation that Dell plans to update the M1210 with SR. If they replace it with a 14", I'll be.
-
-
I doubt they would replace it with a 14" laptop mainly because the 12" laptop market is pretty big almost all major computer manufactures have a 12" laptop, maybe not all up the m1210 like specs but they have one.
-
Well, if you wait, good things always happens
-
well...dell is usually the very first to release their notebooks when a new platform comes out. the fact that they haven't released anything as of yet is indicative that they have some major changes in store. i'm looking forward to seeing what changes they will make.
-
We've got a lot of changes in technology all at once this time around, so it probably took Dell by surprise or at least taxed their capacity to integrate new technology. They've been dealing with alot...Santa Rosa, DX10, re-enabling XP for orders, getting Vista drivers up, starting programs with Linux, etc, etc...
-
i wud be happy to have a dell 1210 with SR and 8M as well.. but the thing that bothers me is that on nvidia's website.. dell is missing as a launchpartner for the 8M series.. part of a nda or dell doesnt plan to do any upgrades soon..
this wait is quite frustrating... -
NDAs are usually in abundance around major refreshes. That is who no information is publicly available.
Good things do come to all who wait... -
Needless to say, I think the "old" design has already been in the grave for a while. Maybe when Santa Rosa comes out... -
ive already moved on due to dells snail pace on SR. new "ugly" lenovo t61 coming soon.
-
Now if only someone would break their NDA and leek us some info and pics... -
good point, but the quado 140M in the T61 will be fine for me, I dont play games, but i do photo editing, and this will be ok. of course, more power is always welcome, but with the T7500, it should move just fine. I realized even if i wait on the "next" m1210, its initial price will be $2000 or more, which Im not going to spend. Moving up to the 14.1" widescreen is a + and -
-
Here, I'll leak some info.
My friend, who is a dell certified systems expert, heard through the dell technician channel that the XPS line should be upgraded to santa rosa by the end of this month. -
I still don't think they will start shipping until at least mid-June, though (unless they stick with Go 7 series GPUs).

Dell is taking way too long to release new notebooks for the consumer division. I'm ready to buy now, and with what they have out now I'm seriously considering a Sony or some other brand. Dell has always been at the forefront of the notebook market but they've really lost their edge especially in design. It's no wonder their sales are terrible. Wake up please.
-
With HP leading the pack in terms of design and specs for their new notebooks recently with all their new designed notebooks and impressively high end specs, and with Dell being so quiet, it seems a tad suspicious.
Perhaps Dell may be upping the ante? -
The release has to be perfect... -
Hey there. I'm new to the these forums but figured I'd join as I'm in the same position as many in this thread. I stumbled upon this today.
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/laptops/rumor-dells-xps-m1210-getting-santa-rosa-on-june-26-263804.php
Sorry if this is old information. I know this is just a "rumor" but I figure I'll wait until that date to see what the skinny is. If Dell manages to cut the weight of the m1210 and bump up performance, consider me sold. -
santa rosa and dell xps m1210?
