I'm looking for a notebook and keep looking at the Dell E1705 because it can get so cheap with that $750 off coupon. I hear a lot of negative things about Dell's quality though so I can'd decide if it'll be worth spending an extra $600 or so for one of the other laptops I'm looking at like the Sager 5750, Compal HEL80 and Asus Z96J. For those of you who own a E1705, what are your opinions?

When it comes down to it the e1705 is an incredible deal with the discounts. You just can't beat it. It doesn't have the highest quality build, but it's certainly a decent, I'd say about average or maybe even a little better than average. In the end things like the screen resolution and GPU are what really matter.

If you really want a nice looking machine and you think the extra 600 or more is worth it, then I suppose Asus or Sager might be your choice.

Ya that's the thing that keeps drawing me too it, it is an incredible deal ;) . There's a thing with free 2gig ram and then with T2400, WUXGA, 7900gs, dvd burner, etc. it would be $1250-1300 after the coupon which is incredible, almost too good to be true. I just keep reading all these bad things about it and wonder if it's really that bad or just people exaggerating.

i just got my e1705 a week ago and heres my first impression :p

when the lappie finally came in, i was a bit suprised at how big it was. i guess i should of actually went to circuit city or best buy to look at their laptop samples with 17 inch screens but i thought it was a behemoth. it was also pretty heavy, weighing in at 7-8 pounds (i didnt look at how much it weighted on the dell site until i ordered).

i'm not sure what the other laptops that you listed were like, but the e1705 is definitely more like a desktop replacement, andn you will most likely won't be carrying it around too much. the battery life is pretty low (by my expectations :p) and should suposedly clock in at around 2:30-3 hours of power, which is actually normal.

i don't have anything to say about how well games run on the lappie because i haven't tried it out yet. i'm still in the process if fixxing/reformating/reinstalling before i actually start downloading and installing games on it.

I bought mine last week and received it last Tuesday. It is amazing! the 7900 GS is very powerful and after reformatting, the whole system is blazing fast.

The only cons I have are this:
    1. The XGA+ screen has some slight light leakage at the bottom (about a quarter inch from the bottom).
    2. It gets very hot. However, that is to be expected with any laptop with these specs/this size. There isn't much I can do about that.

Customize that middle one, where it says "FREE 2GB Memory Upgrade!
A $300 Value!" I got it around $2000 by not taking any extra software or extended warranty. Pick stuff like T2400, WUXGA, 7900GS, Windows Media Center Edition with backup CD, 100gb 7200 rpm hard drive.

I tried adding to cart and using the $750 off coupon but it didn't work, not sure why. Maybe that coupon this week has reached it's limit already, because I met all the other requirements.
