hey everyone. i have a dell 9300 and i have a question. when i close my lid my screen turns off and that is great and all, but once i move my external mouse i can see the monitor turns back on even with the lid closed. this is really annoying cuz there is no point for me to close the lid. is there anyway to fix that? or tough luck haha.

well you could try setting your power settings so that the LCD turns off when the lid is closed or do you already have it set to that?

The way it is suppose to work is that once the lid is lowered beyond a certain point, the LCD should automatically turn off, no matter what your settings are.

yea i already set up the lid so once it closes beyond a certain point it turns off. but for some reason when i move my external mouse while the lid is closed the screen turns back on even while its closed.

Check your bios settings if you have anything like allow usb devices to bring computer out of standby...also check usb controllers properties in device manager

My computer does the same thing, i'm not really sure if there's anything you can do about it.

I doubt that would help since technically the computer isn't in standby, the screen is only turned off.

well i havent tried with an external usb keyboard. you can try it yourself. close your lid and then move your mouse you will notice that your screen lights up while the lid is still closed. just be sure you are in a dark room.

well i was thinking the same thing that Seb said. There is the BIOS setting, but as Zoar said, its not a hibernation issue.

As far as I know I haven't had this happen to me, but I"ll try it later on today.

They always tell you to flash bios. Like with A04, the cpu fan was on low all the time. And when I upgraded to A05, the fan actually cut off. I questioned Dell about this and they said to reflash with A05, so I did, and the fan still cuts off. I guess tech support doesn't know what they are talking about. I tried you thing, and the screen comes on too. I think its a windows xp thing. Maybe something else than Dell Quickset might control it.

yea i am thinking it might have to be with win xp or something. so now the fan cuts off is that bad? wont the computer overheat or something?

Well you know the gpu stays on slow when the machine is one and the cpu fan comes in and out. Like right now, Centrion Hardware Control says the cpu is 48C and gpu 53C, but the fan for the cpu doesn't kick in until around 55C. I have i9kfangui running and I directly control the fans that way. A minute ago I turned the cpu fan on slow and my cpu temp is 37C. You can see it right here.

I don't get why Dell did that. I rather have the fans on versus my laptop having a heat stroke.

dell did it to save battery life obviously. 55 C is not that high for the pentium m. its not good for it to idle at that, but it is not near the chips heat limit. so i would rather have my chip fluctuate between 35-55 C and maybe save 15 mins of battery, than stay at 35 C.

Yeah, but with the 9-cell, I'm getting nearly 3 hours of battery life, so I'll take the cooler temps over battery life.

Yeah, you can also make different profiles in i9kfangui. I haven't played with it though. I usually have to fight with the bios though with direct control. I enable slow fan control with the cpu fan, and after some time, I see that bios cuts the fan off. I have to go back and enable it. Maybe the profiles would control it absolute. Try it out.

i make my run when at startup so the software automatically starts controlling my fan once i turn on windows. so give that a try.
