I'm worried about the same thing. I ordered an XPS M1330 on 12/20 and it shipped this morning. I don't know if I should be excited of worried. It went from pre-production to shipped.

dont worry. the ESD are always later than the ship dates. they do this so that of there is a delay no one can bug them.

I ordered an Inspiron 1520 on 19/12. Just got a phone call saying it will be delivered on the 28/12/07. The worrying thing is that my EDD is on or before 10/01/08

My M1530 order date: 19.12.2007 its still in pre production and expected around 10.1.2008 so quite slow on my end; quite likely they won't speed it up to the extent of some of you guys.

Maybe somebody cancelled their order who had the same specs as you.

I order mine on the 12/21 and it already shows to be shipped and I should have it either on the 12/26 or 12/27! I'm not worried I'm excited!
I've built several desktops before and it doesn't take but an hour and thats in a living room not a "Factory" I don't think I would be worried they're only plugging in pieces and sending it down the line. Most of the time DELL quotes double the build time and then get the order out in less then a week. Under promise, Over deliver. Think about it this way if they quote you 10 days and you get it in 14 you would be upset but, if they quote you 14 days and you get in 14 days or less your happy. Just a normal marketing technique that has been around forever.

thanks then I guess I should be excited :)

This is my first time ordering too so I don't know what to expect. That's the only reason I posted here to know if this is normal. If you don't have anything to contribute to the post then don't leave a useless comment like that that won't help the poster.

it seems everyone is getting the orders a little sooner, i ordered 12/17 my ETA was jan/7/08, but last night i get a "just shipped" e-mail. so i have no idea when to expect it,

i mean maybe they wanted to get the orders out quickly so that we dont complain about the new lcd options that JUST came out!!!!

what is "quite a few" and where did you hear this? you do realize it doesn't really take 3 weeks to build a laptop? i'm guessing they put it together in about 30 minutes, the "rush" part is how many laptops are ahead of yours and their inventory components. it has nothing to do with the actual build of the laptop.

okay, her is my story . ordered on 12-9th was at my place 12-19th. returned it to dell 12-20th.. the monitor frame was not fixed well in place.. and the strip that has mulimedia and start keys was a used part it has so many scratches ... WTF...
so I'm sure they give you long ESD to start with, this way no one call and say why my computer has not shipped yet... Good plan. and then they get you excited that you will get it sooner .... also good + points for Dell

I felt the same way when they send it 20 days earlier than ESD .. and I was right it was put togeather very fast.. I hope that is not the case with every one...

all that was good to me because I ordered the new LCD instead of 800X1200

Is it possible that the holiiday production frenzy is over for Dell or any online computer manufacturers? I mean I don't expected to buy a Dell or HP online today and expect to deliver by midnight. Most people who considered or bought their loved one a online gift would've done it atleast couple of weeks ago. And with all those money I spent this holiday season (including M1530 a Christmas gift to myself), I think I'll have to second mortgage something, in order to feed myself for next couple of months.
    So my guess is...
They might simply don't have enough orders to delay. I don't think and (HOPE) my system is not less in quality then those who've received their notebooks with a week long production.

Some people complain they get their laptop too late, some complain its too early.... Are you guys 12 or something ? Companies know that they will be recieving tons of orders for the holidays so im sure they prepare somehow. Maybe they preproduce the most common builds so other ones could be done quicker. Either way... just wait until you get it and if something doesnt work THEN worry about it...

there is no point to this post whatsoever.

There were probably a lot of these units built with pre-configured popular specs before dell even released them to the public. Also, a lot of people have cancelled orders that were in production(I'm one of them) and some lucky person probably got that laptop which sped up their delivery time. For every cancelled laptop order, there is going to be at least 100 more with that same configuration and 1 out of that 100 will be the lucky one to have their ship date moved up.

I wouldn't stress over it too much but be grateful it's coming sooner. Dell will not be sending a refurbished product as new 'cause they don't want to get sued. Still your unit could have problems but that again is an issue with mass production in general and no hardware is 100% guaranteed.

not just a problem with mass production, the fact that Dell have the worst QA testers in the business (from my personal dealings with them) doesn't really help either!

I had MAJOR pains with Dell (2 faulty units, and ended up spending £30 on phone calls), it was my 1st and last dealings with Dell. I now have a Sony VGN-SZ61WN/C, and no problems at all.

For those that have ordered from Dell, I just hope you guys get good machines and dont have to go through what I had to!

very true, im just grateful i got such a good deal. even if i do *knock on wood* have to send it back for xyz reason (which i don't think is an unreasonable assumption based on the complaints here), itll still be worth it in the end.

The fact is... most people have in their head that Dell starts every computer from scratch and start producing it once you placed your order. That might have been true in the past, but now with the volume of sales they have and the still very LIMITED amount of possible combinations, they can pre-produce units, being sure they'll sell them the same day anyway.
