Just curious what is the built quality of Dells? I am really close on pulling the trigger on one of the XPS laptops on sale right now. I am just concerned on build quality. I know with the apples I own both had their motherboards fry (one in warranty still, one out). really I just get nervous before pulling the trigger and just kind of want to check all my angles. Thanks.

It is a matter of chance. You will never know if you will need it. If you feel confident on doing laptop repairs yourself then i wouldn't. Or if you feel you would spill water on it or something, then i would. I choose not to, but its personal preference.

It all depends on your needs...

How long do you plan to own the computer?
How much is the extension over your base cost?
How much is the warranty costing per year beyond your initial?
What are your finances like? Do you have enough money to replace a part as soon as it dies?
How crucial is the machine? Can you stand to be without it for an extended time as you diagnose the problem and buy parts?
    Etc...

There are a lot of questions to gauge the value of the warranty (or lack of value). The answers to those questions can only come from you...

So, in short, no one here can ever tell you what to do in this case.

Also, past reliability is not a predictor of future reliability.
