My computer has been going into one of these modes when it goes idle, even though I changed the settings so it wouldn't do anything when I close the lid or just leave it alone for a while. How do I fix this? Does it have anything to do with it being unplugged?

Also, whats the difference between sleep and hibernate anyways?

hibernate shuts everything down and is the lowest power consumer......it writes all the information in the ram to the drive

sleep shutdowns most but not all and keeps the information stored in the ram....

when I close the lid on my laptop I prefer to put it in hibernation because of the low power consumption and I dont waste time booting the computer back up when I want to use the computer again

On my m1330 with Vista, sleep works very well, with almost instant on (waking from hibernation naturally takes more time). I believe this is a Vista feature. Battery usage during sleep is about 1% per hour, so I have set it to sleep for 48 hours before hibernating. Since I use the computer every day, in practice it never hibernates unless I make it hibernate.
