...the more I use my m1210 the more issues I seem to find![]()
anyways. I have the Sony Q58A DVD+/-RW with the UDS2 firmware on it (apparently, according to EEPROM anyway). After a bit of googling, some sites stated that it should be able to write at 8x. Mine isn't. Nero only lets me burn at 4x. The discs I use are Memorex DVD+R 16x; my other computer seems to have no problems burning them at 8x.
So, the question is, does or does not the q58a support burning at 8x?

What software are you using?

Your drive does support 8x burning, but this is only a maximum rate, not the guranteed burning rate. Because of the nature of laptops, you will not burn at 8x all the time. Generally, I burn between 4x-6x depending on what media I'm burning. This happens with all laptops on the market. Sometimes, you might hit 8x, but it won't stay there for the entire burn session.
If you need something faster, then look at an external cd/dvd - rw drive. Desktops drives and external drives are able to burn at the maximum rate.

If it does burn at 8x it is only the very outer edge that burns at 8x. 10.5-11 minutes is the fastest laptop burner I have seen. Might want to try some better discs than Memorex whose quality can vary widely. I would recommend Taiyo Yudens, the best blank discs both CDs and DVDs.

Your drive’s firmware is limiting the speed at which certain media can be written. You'll have to find the media that your drive can burn 8x with as it is a firmware limitation on writing speed for most media that is sub par (like your Memorex media). I'd suggest you try Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim.
slow burn times (again)
