I have a dell inspiron 1100 about 3 yrs old. 30 gig hard drive with about 27% used. I has an athalon processor. It is running slower and slower until it now hardly processes at all. What can I do to fix it?

A defragment may help the computer load up faster, and generally be a little snappier. Also, it may be helpful to deselect some of the start up programs. If you have a Norton product installed, then that may be the cause, as it is quite a resource hogging program.

Disk Cleanup / Defragment HD (Start>Accessories>System Tools) - check for adware/spyware/Viruses
    and/or
Backup Data / ram/HD upgrade - fresh load of windows - otherwise look to purchse a new lappy in near future if you dont want to invest in upgrades -

Increasing the RAM might help. So will defragmenting, as posted above.

Format the disk and do a fresh install.
Defragmenting and cleaning startup/background apps will certainly help; but 3 years is a very long time to run Windows without a reinstall.

I had XP home running on a desktop 24/7 for over 4 years without reloading the os. It would still be running today but I am selling it and wiped the disks. It was rock solid and stable and I installed and removed a plethora of software applications and made several hardware changes over the years. I should mention that I built the system myself.

To see what exactly is the cause of the slow performace, download the program Taskinfo. It will work for 30 days (I think) then you have to buy it or stop using it. It will list every process running on the pc and display how much CPU resources every process is using along with displaying system memory usage, swap space, etc.

That's funny. The Inspiron 1100's came with Intel Celeron or Pentium 4 processors. How did you get an AMD Athlon to work in one?
