they said they would exchange my unit EXCEPT they said they know of the bleeding problem everyone "thinks" they have and there really is no problem.. its normal.. lol yeah okay... they said they will be now only replacing lcd's after they are sent in to them for inspection. if they dont think there is an issue then they dont have to replace it.. wtf?? i guess i got lucky since i already have my order number for the replacement i am just hoping and crossing my fingers that this one is better than the last one was... imo that sucks for anyone that has not got them yet.. now this may not end up being true but this is what they said today.. just fyi for anyone

Yeah I just spoke with a dell rep and they said they can only replace "like for like" and so if they replaced my screen it won't fix the problem. I don't think Dell documents these problems very well, because there have definitely been people on this board who have received samsung screens as screen replacements. I'm just wondering why we can't demand a better manufacturer.

I got my replacement computer today, btw. Same screen AUO1447. Still just as horrible screen. I'm about to give up on this - I think I would have been happier knowing there was nothing else I could do. But some people do have the better screens and I think that makes me a little unsatisfied.

Anyway, I hope they fix your screen issue.

A couple of things, light leakage happens with EVERY MONITOR. Just happens some are worse than others, and the system builder can't even tell unless they use it. There is no way to perfect manufacturing so it doesn't happen, that's just the nature. Two, what the rep means by "like for like" is that they can't make any changes to the system. The reason why they said this, was they had no idea what you were asking for. Truth is, you cannot request a certain manufacturer component at all - it's impossible. They just grab whatever is there. As for which one is better, I actually got a replacement 1420 (different issue) that has an LG screen - and I actually like the original AUO one MUCH better. There is no one manufacturer that is better than the other, that's just the way it is. But you can either request a tech be dispatched for a screen replacement and see if you can request a certain kind, not sure...but you definitely can't request a certain kind when you are ordering.

Light leakage is not so much a defect as an unwanted "side effect" of LCD monitors. This is also true for the horrendous viewing angles of many LCDs, though this is less of an excuse as they are making good/great LCD TVs that have 170-170 degree viewing angles.

yes i understand that.. ill await the second one.. i looked at more than 30 notebook in stores and saw none of what i am seeing on my dell.. not fron a single one of them. so we will see when the second one comes then ill either send em both back or see which one i can live with more and keep that one.. i know most lcd's have some leakage but this amount is ridiculous imo...brans i looked at included hp, toshiba, sony, gateway, acer etc... none of them were even remotly close to being this bad most you could not even see any leakage unless the screen's brightness was maxed out

I have a WXGA 1520 coming as well, so hopefully it will be good. I have had really good experiences with WXGA 15.4 inch LCDs in the past though (owned a E1505 for a while, now have a Gateway at work which is gorgeous). Though to be honest, I've never been really bothered with light leakage. (I do detest graininess/sparkles which is why I did not choose the higher res screens)

see thats why i am so upset the screen i have now is VERY NICE except for the MAJOR bleeding. wonderful color and picture, actually decent viewing angle better then the toshiba we have here.. thats why i am so hesitant on the new system.. this is a cpt branded one and it is really a very nice screen. i have yet to see anyone else post this brand though?? i wonder if there were only a few who got these.. most people are getting lg, samsung, or auo it seems.. is cpt a good brand?? i know they have to do with tatung, they are a partner or something like that

So true. Every LCD has light leakage. Just maybe not in the same places. In desktop monitors, the backlight is placed in the middle. On laptops, they are usually placed down beside the hinge. That's why it's more noticeable on laptops, because the bottom of the screen is more lit than the top. (on desktops it's the very edges, and on my screen, it's impossible at times for me to tell.)

If turn on the blank screensaver, you can tell where the light is located, if your eyes are good enough.

Were you able to actually put up a black background? Also, if your not in a total darkness, you would be hard pressed to see leakage.

I've seen leakage on alot of my screens, (My current XPS M2010, old XPS M1210, old E1505, etc), but I almost never have a completely dark room, so either that helped or the slight amount just didn't bother me as much.

Now I don't know how much exactly is on your screen (it could very well be unacceptable I know), but know that I've read that people's light leakage improves over time.

My T61 had light leakage, but with Windows running, it was not noticeable one bit.

oh yeah def can be seen in a well lit room. when windows is up i cant honestly see it. when screen saver or dvd or games with darker backround is on OH YEAH its VERY noticable.. even if it was just like a "glow" it would not bother me.. this is more like a bright white rainbow or something shaped like that... its like i can directly see the ccfl tube directly behind there perfectly.. the shape and all.. does suck since i have still yet to read of anyone else getting the cpt branded screen and it looks REALLY NICE color and white/grey/black wise. not a hint of grain, and viewing angle is decent not great but pretty good.. like i said even if it was a simple glow or a softer white presence on the screen it would not look so bad.. this reminds me of the sun rising over a mountain if the sun were white lol..
