Yes, that's correct. I'm pretty sure this has been asked at least once or twice before. Check this board and the Windows Software board.

    Sad. Really.

Vista at this point it crap. I have not had anything but chaos working it all out. Everyone else I know has problems relating to everything you can imagine.

    Thanks Microsoft.

..Maybe I need to learn Linux...but never tried it. Soon.

Well if you are using Dell's VLK XP CD's then it will not apply to you. The Dell branded Windows XP CD's are VLK that do not require activation and all installations of Dell laptops use the same CD-Key.

I can bet you the key that is under your system is not even used on your current installation.

You go ahead and install Vista and your Windows XP CD will be usable in the future on Dell systems.

So far, I've used my Dell XP CD to install XP on another I6400 and a Dell Dimension desktop.

    That's really interesting, TheGriffin.

When I did a clean install of XP on my dell e1505 using the supplied dell XP media, I was never asked for my key. At the time, I thought that it was kind of odd, but what your saying makes some sense of my experience.

To me, this is good news. I plan on upgrading once I receive my express upgrade from dell, but I would like the ability to "downgrade" back to XP without too much difficulty.
