now i have not heard of anyone hear recieving a sharp lcd.. but a close friend of mine just came back from going to one of the sharp factories overseas in asia. i spoke in GREAT DETAIL with him about all the grainy screens and "sparkly" screens etc... he gave me some info on what causes the sprakle grain effect...this was his explanation of all this mess
when the glossy coatings from any company let it be samsung, auo, lg, etc.. (dell's truelife, other companies bright view, or whatever they want to call it its all the same thing) are manufactured they are done so to what are supposed to be extremely strict guidelines. he told me the thing that causes that effect we are seeing is the glossy coating either being made to thick or being made non-uniform. to thick will cause usually both grain and "glint" (is what he calls it) to be seen. non uniform will cause what some refer to as a greasy or oily look.
to show me this effect he had me take a thin clear sheet of plastic (i used the one that covered the screen on my sager when i got it) and place it over the matte desktop screen i had.. guess what.. nasty grain and "glint" everywhere. he told me that was due to that piece of plastic being to thick.
as soon as i remove it the screen looks perfect. these coatings are supposed to be a specific thickness and he said a few companies are known for kind he called "overdoing it" in his business. samsung being one of them. he told me these compaies are just spitting these lcd's out so fast anymore that people like himself have to continue to monitor production. he is always flying back and forth to check on things over there. he said they do have quality control but SO MANY things get through and thousands upon thousands will get made sometimes before a issue is known.
i do believe this was a response given by dell at one point. i do now believe it.
he went on to tell me also that wsxga and wuxga screens will ALWAYS show much more of this effect than lower res ones. i did not ask why. i prob should have. some of the absolute nicest laptop screens i have ever seen are sharp ones. he also went into much detail about how the coatings are made and what is actually in them with me. quite fascinating imo. im going to write up a post on it as soon as i have the free time. but this was a response directly from someone on quality control for sharp themselves...

ah. so there are a buttload of lousy screens out there due to poor manufacturing/bad quality control... no surprise there. i really truly wonder if the SEC3350 (famously grainy WSXGA+ glossy LCD) is cheaper than an equivalent LG- the LPFL300, for instance. maybe anne@dell will chime in here? i can't see any reason other than supply issues/price to continue using bad LCDs. blah. i'm done with dell. going with a sager 2090. i think i'll order tomorrow. booya!

I wonder how many people really have issues or only sending back cause they have a samsung and it looks "funny" to them when they press their nose against the screen. ... lol...
-
i suspect that most, if not all of the SEC3350 LCDs are grainy. i saw three and they were all terrible. i don't think i've seen anyone say they liked that model... wait- one person. out of dozens.
i've said it several times now- if you have to put your nose to the screen to detect a problem, you don't have one. -
Good to know , thanks for the info .
And yeah , the Sharp notebook I once owned had the best screen I have ever seen in a notebook . -
lol Like I posted in a thread before.. To much demand at once so manufacturing quality got cut down a notch to meet demand.

I have a SEC3350 screen and its perfect when my head is ata a normal distance from the screen but when i put my nose right next to the screen then i see grain. But who cares since no-one ever uses a laptop with their nose right up to the screen.

Actutally i just checked in the Device Manager and i actually have a SEC4457 screen. The only problem i have is lightbleed at the bottm and the viewing angles arent great.
