You may have one of those driver related issues...MS said they wouldn't allow users to download SP1 from windows update if you had a driver on the problem-list.
But MS didn't say who's on the problem list. -
the sadness
-
My latitude gets to see the SP1 no problem. Did you install all the other updates?
-
Here's an SP1 Article about today's release. In it, there's a link to a MS Knowledgebase that lists the affected hardware w/driver issues.
I have an Inspiron 6000 and SP1 appears in my Windows Update. I do have a SigmaTel, but the driver file mentioned is not one of mine.
I'm going to DL/install SP1 right now. -
You can download the full install from microsoft.com. It will not let you install if it detects a problem driver.
-
yup i got all the updates and i have a m1530 basically the same as stevey's
-
I cant install it cos my sound card drivers are to old SigmaTel isn't new enough problem is these are the latest from Dell!!
Dell 9400 -
I downloaded it from Microsoft download center and installed on my m1530. Works fine.
-
Tried that it wont install says about the driver for me!
Dell are such muppets!
Apparently its a known issue but Dell or MS should have worked around this weeks ago! i mean how many 9400/E1705 users out their?
A fix could be weeks away too!

Wanted to install SP1 pissed off now! -
I was having a problem due to the fingerprint scanner drivers.
I downloaded new ones from below to make it work:
http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/drivers/windows.asp -
Yea, can't you try to get the newer sigmatel driver from their website?
-
I had issues with my Vostro 1500 with the following drivers:
SigmaTel (Stwrt.sys - version 6.10.5511.0 or earlier)
Intel Display (Igdkmd32.sys - versions between and including driver 7.14.10.1322 and 7.14.10.1403)
After updating through support.dell.com, I was able to find SP1 under Windows Update. -
i got it to install on my x64 ultimate
-
1 plus rep coming your way! -
Issues abounded for me before I decided to do a system restore.
For some reason, the standalone installer didn't check my system at all. I have the Intel x3100 and Dell's most recent driver for the D630 is woefully outdated.
I proceeded anyway-hung during install after 3 hours. -
I'm getting ready to install SP1 right now. It showed up in my updates.
-
Here's my results:
-Couldn't see the SP1 download via Windows Update.
-Ensured all 'normal' updates were applied. Still no SP1 visible.
-Updated UPEK drivers for biometric. Still no SP1 visible.
-Manually downloaded SP1 thru Microsoft site.
-SP1 installed without errors.
Go figure. -
I installed SP1 in my D630. It works fine. (though I couldn't see any difference

hey guys
I just got a my M1530 but I cannot even go to microsoft to even see SP1 on a list to try download.
I just downloaded the update for the finger print update but still not finding and update, could someone please send me a link to see what the problem is on (my) laptop or a link for the SP1 download in microsoft.
Thanks so much -

NOTE: Using Windows Update, the Vista SP1 size is only 65 MB instead of the 434.5 MB :

I had a look at the MS article, uninstalled the Sigmatel drivers, rebooted and installed the MS HD Audio driver and SP1 appeared through WU. Gonna keep using the MS audio driver for now until Sigmatel (IDT) and Dell come out with an SP1 compatible driver.
-
Installed on my XPS 1730. Works like a charm. I even see the 4GB installed on my system (though only 3 are still used for obvious reasons)
-
I have an XPS 1330, and like others here I could not initially see the SP1 in Windows Update. I checked out the MS article, updated my drivers, and now all is good.
canada16: Note that there are two sets of fingerprint downloads. There is the software on Dell's site, and the actual drivers on UPEK's site. It's the drivers you need.
Go here:
http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/drivers/windows.asp
And download the 4.4Mb package.
The update is painless and fast. Then re-boot. Yes, it doesn't say you need to, but I think you need to refresh Window's listing before update works. SP1 should now appear in Update.
Hopefully this helps!

I got SP1 through Windows Update yesterday. Using an m1730.
-
I installed the SP1 via updates painlessly last night. Didn't take that long either and so far everything is working fine. I'm going to run the PC & 3Dmark test later to see if there is any differences.
Before running SP1, I'd defrag, run your virus scanner etc to make sure everything is clean. HECK, I forgot, you just got yours... you probably don't need to. -
I downloaded the 434mb SP1 file directly from Microsoft last night. I have a 1520 and a 1420, both with Vista H.P. I wanted to get the stand-alone file so I didn't have to download it twice.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6D-5EBB-413B-89C9-CB3D06D12674&displaylang=en
Install went without a hitch on my 1520. It took 57 minutes from the instant I launched the installer to the point where it was fully rebooted and back to normal. No warnings, no errors, everything works as it did before. My system was fully patched with the latest Dell files for video, sound, network, etc.
I haven't really had time to run tests to see if anything is better or worse than before.
Going to do the 1420 tonight. -
I just downloaded the full package rather then through a windows update
Ive put my initial thoughts on SP1 here. -
I have a m1330 and windows update did not show SP1 even after updating any possible drivers. I downloaded and ran the full SP1 install which then indicated that it could not be installed because I have an incompatible language pack installed - Chinese.
After I uninstalled the two Chinese language packs, SP1 was visible in Windows Update so I installed using the smaller download. -
FWIW, just pulled the 400+mb file down and ran it on my D630. I had the latest drivers from Dell, all of which were not in the iffy list from MS accept video and audio.
My video drivers were older than the problematic range, I attempted to first install the latest Intel version, which wouldn't install on the Dell at all. Dell's latest Intel 965/x3100 drivers are earlier than the problematic range for SP1.
My audio drivers were EARLIER than the problematic range on the MS list, again, still the latest that Dell has provided and Sigmatel didn't have anything newer to download, they just point you back to the OEM.
Anyway, SP1 installed w/o a hitch, seems to be fine. I do not at this point notice much difference, but more time using it will tell.
One thing I do notice, I'm now reporting 4.0gb of memory...very very strange as 32-bit shouldn't be addressing that much memory. Some of the 4gb max of a 32-bit OS is sluffed off b/c of video and other HW memory mappings. Prior to this update, I only reported 3.5gb or something, now it's 4.0, not sure why, or if it's accurate as to what's actually addressed and being used by the OS.
Will report back if I find other problems or have more to say about performance boosts or this memory goofiness.

m1530: updated fingerprint drivers, restarted, opened automatic updates from cp, check for updates, didnt show up the first time, second time it was there
whole process took about 1 hour, no erros whatsoever
to repeat what hylton said: at this point i dont notice much difference -
UPDATE: Memory issue isn't really an issue, SP1 must have done something to report something different on the 'System' screen. When I went to task manager, still only ~3.5gb allocated.

So it's been 2 days and Windows Update still tells me there are no new updates available? What the who. Should I just download the +300MB standalone version?
-
Here is how I got SP1 to install on my M1330:
1. I installed the updated fingerprint driver from the link that was provided in this thread.
2. I installed all OPTIONAL updates under Windows Update. You must install them before windows update will show SP1.
3. Restarted my computer
4. Checked for updates again and it appeared! Downloading it right now...
Hope this helps someone... -
Installed SP1 a couple of hours ago, didn't notice anything different...time will tell.
-
i do se some performance increase in everyday work now.. also shutdown and hibernation is faster.. copying files also much better..
-
I have been using my laptop for the same nature of tasks since the day I got it (well, 2 weeks ago).
After the SP1 update last night, the first thing I feel is that the laptop is heating up much quickly and hot air from the vents
Is SP1 putting the system to work harder that it gets heated up quickly or am I just imagining that ? -
All is good here after heavy testing too.
Small home network with 3 shared printers, and a shared USB hard disk drive. All computers updated via windows update, all used the 68 (or so) MB download.
Only one problem was the Shared USB hard disk on a desktop (used primarily for everyone's backup). It had to be "unplugged" power and USB cord, and then plugged back in again (like new out of the box). Then from the desktop had to be "re-shared" so the wireless laptops could gain access again.
Since I often use "perfomance monitor" for a "look-see" I could tell the computer(s) went through optimizing, defrag, and other stuff, and would talk to Microsoft as needed, after sp1 was applied to the computer(s).
The Inspiron 1526 (the AMD version of the 1525), is running great. It is currently using BIOS A08, and I see Dell has just posted a new download to take it to A11. I will wait a few days, week, or maybe a month before I apply it.
I have found if your 1526 (and most likely 1525) have a TSST L632H, then it must have both the Roxio drivers and the TSST L632H firmware patch applied in order for the DVD/CD drivie to work correctly (like with iTunes etc). I applied those patches about 1 month ago, long before sp1............all that still functions perfectly.
I have only been using Vista Home Premium for about 3 months now (all the previous patches had gotten most of the bad things out of the way). For a small home network it is good............but I do miss the real domain control for user accounts.
Overall, I like it. -
Been doing some digging and the M1530 SigmaTel driver is a newer version than that available for V1400/I1420, V1500/I1520, V1700/I1720 and is newer than the problem drivers referenced (M1530 driver is 5614 and not included in the problem drivers whereas the one available for my 1700 is 5511 which is).
Installed the 5614 M1530 drivers and all is working well. Not sure if upgrading to these drivers would result in SP1 being available via WU as I was already SP1'd up -
Updated my 1420 last night with SP1 thru Windows Update. It took about 1 hour. However, I feel that the boot up time is longer than pre-sp1 update. Anybody feels the same way?
Other than that, I didn't use it enough to see if things are faster in other ways since the update was done around 11pm and then I went to bed. I will play around with it more in the next few days. -
I just installed SP1 on my 1330 - everything seems to be working fine. Sleep functionality in particular appears to be VERY fast (at least waking up).
If you don't see SP1 in windows update, it's probably because the fingerprint scanner driver that comes with the 1330 is one of the listed drivers that will prohibit SP1 from installing. Unfortunately, the fingerprint reader driver and suite available on Dell's website does not update the driver.
But you can download a new driver for it that will work here:
http://www.upek.com/support/download...rs/windows.asp
It'll update the Touchchip Fingerprint Coprocessor to driver version 1.9.2.111, which is new enough to allow SP1 to show up in WU. After you install the new driver (no need to uninstall Fingerprint Reader Suite), restart your computer. Once it restarts, open windows update, and check for update. You should see SP1 appear.
Hope this helps. -
All of the above from foxy is correct. See my post above for the finger scanner link.

Sadly My 1520 still doesn't have SP1 listed in my Windows update.
