will virus scans / defrags run in the backgrd when computer is standby or hardrive shutoff to reduce heat overnite? Or is monitor shutoff the most i can do without interrupting the programs?

Um, if it's in standby that means the hard drive is off, aka not moving. And so you won't be able to run anything like that. In fact, you can't run anything in standby, aka sleep mode.

Now, if you set the hard drive to spin down after awhile due to inactivity, it's possible that it might stay on to finish defrag or virus scan, but it depends on the program.

Basically, you have to leave the computer on. Some utilities have an option to shut the computer off after its process is complete.

No it will not. The harddrive is off and no programs are running on standby
