I am typing from my other computer, my Dell 1501 is playing up it does get shared by my step daughter who is often on facebook etc., however the dell will not go past the first wallpaper and hasw no icone on desktop. It tries to recognize some bluetooth thing that I do not want as I cannot find disc anyway. If I ctrl +alt+del it says This has been delete or disabled , contact administrator which is me!
I obviously can,t get to add remove progs.
Can anyone help anf if so help further to get this laptop running smoother through some basic tools or methods.
Cheers Pat

Boot into safemode and run a virus scan. Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't get disabled unless a) administrative privileges have been specifically disabled or b) you've been infected by a virus. I'd suggest talking to your stepdaughter about safe browsing habits as well.

Many thanks, right it comes up multi disk rd disk partition 2 and a heap of drivers , do I press enter again/
Well tried it and nothing just a page full of drivers listed to previous statement above. -

I get safe mode and enter,
Then this comes up,
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\AVGIDSxx.sys
This is the last line that comes up with a repetition of this up to the end of Drivers\ for previous linesand the addition of avgrkx86.sys going in ascending order ; BTHidMgr.sys Mup.sys;NDIS.sys ; Ntfs.sys ; WudfPf.sys , etc.
This page just remains there and nothing I can do to change it ,except switch off. -
That's just a list of the background drivers and files being loaded into memory so that the computer can boot into safe mode. You're killing it too early. Normally all those lines of text are hidden and you see a scrolling bar. It's shown for diagnostic purposes in safe mode. Let it complete the process. If it stalls for a few minutes (no new lines appear) and does not progress, then something else is wrong.

Yes its stalled for 20mns now and no cursor there either.

Stick the window install CD in there and select the repair option when prompted. Based on what you've said, if that doesn't do anything, the OS might be toast. However, I'd try asking in the appropriate Windows subforum here for help to see if anyone else has input on this.

many thanks will try further.
