just bought dell studio 17 with t8100 processor, love this laptop but i am finding the fan is switching on and off every 2 minutes. not running anything just internet. had a sony before and fan never kicked in for ages. i am finding it distracting, i would rather have it on constantly. the room i am in is well ventilated and so is the laptop. is this a problem with laptop or is this normal?
i only just switch it on and it happens straight away, no heat is coming from the case anywhere. is there away to set the settings, not using battery only mains power. any help

Well I am sure your Sony didn't have as powerful of a processor. These get hotter, so the fan will be kicking on more. That is normal.

What are your temperatures? You can use Speed Fan, RM Clock, I8kfangui and others to find this. Alternatively you can use I8kfangui to control your fan. It shouldn't be coming on that often unless you are using the processor heavily.
-
you can control the fan with I8fangui but then your mouse is not working anymore. I tried all programs to get my fan quieter, non of the above progs are running well on the studio. The loud fan drives me cracy and no help from Dell. If somebody knows of any other possibilities please let us know

I use I8kfangui on mine and my mouse works. My fan never comes on high speed at all. Have you upgraded to the latest BIOS?
-
ye, i think that is normal for studio 17. the fan already turns on very often at very low cpu usage. i8kfangui makes mouse controll impossible for me as well.
fan starts at cpu 37-43 °C and stops again at 28-31 °C (depending on the software you use to read out sensors). i think they should increase that to 50 °C...
A04 bios. -
I can't imagine that the temps are fluctuating that often so there must be something going on....
-
dont underestimate, how fast it can heat up.
Do you have the big battery or the standard one? i got the big one -> notebook is jacked up at the rear -> causing better air fluctuations (there are air vents at the bottom of the studio!).
you may try out, whether placing your studio on some books/cds to lift it up a little bit, helps the air supply and cooling of the notebook.
edit: but mine turns on very often, too. -
ok well that's good to know. I actually have a really neat little table with a cutout in the middle so most of the surface area on the bottom is exposed.
