strange thing tonight -- Inspirion 9400 -- and a concern.

usually my CPU temps, according to i8kfangui, is 35-45 degress celsius. but tonight it was well into the 50s for a time. sometimes it would drop to mid 40s, but a second later, it was back up to mid fifties, only to drop again. for the first time EVER, my fans via i8kfangui went on HIGH for the CPU. for a few minutes, the CPU temps were HIGHER than the temps for 7900GS.

looking at the CPU usage while this was going on, seems like a lot of "spikey" indications. the only thing sucking up CPU cycles is avp.exe -- kapersky / active virus shield.

now, crazy time again: it's idling at 36.

any ideas what this might be? i've never seen a 20 degree difference before, even during graphic design work.

there's not a history of I9400 C2Ds melting down, is there?

    Its normal.

As long as it doesn't go above 80c do not worry.

hey thanks for the info. what a relief.

i disabled the file antivirus (Active Virus Shield) and it brought the temps down right away. dunno what changed -- maybe the program updated to be a nuisance or something. it never used to do that.
