A couple of months ago I bought an Inspiron 6400 notebook. I'm dual-booting it with Windows XP and SuSE Linux and everything works great except for one, deeply annoying thing - the system bell is driving me crazy! It is incredibly loud and I cannot find a way to turn it off. Any help here would be much appreciated.

    Thanks a lot,
    Alex

When does the system bell go off? In XP or Linux?

Windows is the main culprit. It goes off occasionally in Linux, but it isn't nearly as bad. I've changed the sound settings in XP so that there are no alert sounds on anything, but it still goes off.

What are you doing when it happens? More details about it when it goes off would help. Try checking the BIOS for sound or alerts. Did you drop it or spill something on it?

I had this same issue and someone pointed me to the culprit.

    Go to:

Device manager->view->hidden devices->Under nonplug and play, right click on beep to disable.
