Hi, I bought a Vostro 1500 on the 12th, and I tried to call the automated order status number, but it transferred me to a live person and put me on hold instead of a machine telling me the order status, so I decided to use the chat thing. It told me that there were no available people, so I tried again, and again, and again, and a few minutes later, I got through. After waiting for about 10 minutes in the queue, I talked to a person and he said it was "in production". I asked him for more detailed information, but all he would say is "in production". I was about to exit, then out of the blue, he said, "you want free next day shipping"? So I said yes, then exited.

After that, I checked my order status online, and it went from "in production" to "shipped"! Is that possible? I thought there were steps in between. Anyway, after the initial shock of seeing "shipped" instead of "in production", I clicked on the order status, and it still says 3 to 5 day shipping. Does it not update online, or did this guy not upgrade my shipping?

If it ends up not being upgraded, do you guys think that complaining will get me my upgraded shipping, or will it just be a waist of my time?

So I guess my real questions are, should I be worried about my status going directly from "in production" to "shipped", and did my shipping get upgraded, or did the chat guy lie?

The free next day shipping is nice, but I am worried about my order going from "in production" to "shipped" right after the chat session. I don't know if this is a glitch that could screw up my order or not.

In my limited experience, I have found that when they make a special adjustment for you, it doesnt show up in the online order description. This includes extra credits/discounts after your order was made, as well as shipping changes.

So dont trust what the web page says, if youve been told that you will have overnight shipping, and the web page still says standard.

My online order thingie still says 7/25 for the estimated shipping date, even though it has been changed to 8/1. And it doesnt reflect a discount I was given for having to change my shipping address due to the delay.

The Next Day shipping (or any other change in shipping type) has to go through "24 hours" before the order leaves Dell to get applied. Anyway, be glad it shipped, the reps do not have any way to go into the system and chage stuff like that just to mess with you.

Doesn't my laptop have to be boxed and tested and maybe some other stuff before it's shipped? An hour ago it was "in production" and now it's "shipped" Did my laptop magically teleport from Malaysia to America and get tested on the way, or is there a glitch in Dell's system somewhere?

I was in "pre production" for 1 week, then I was in "in production" for 1 week, then I skipped a few steps and now I am in "shipped". Does testing and boxing get included in the "in production" status?

I just talked on chat again, and the person said that my order shipped via DHL standard shipping. She gave me a tracking number, but it doesn't work. I am hoping DHL hasn't updated their system yet and that it will work tomorrow.

I asked about my order status skipping "boxing", and the person just gave a fake answer of the website being down.

Hopefully, my laptop really shipped and it isn't somewhere in Malaysia and they accidentally screwed up my order. That would really suck if I never get my laptop but they said they shipped it and I can't get my money back. That would make me mad, and I might turn into the Hulk and destroy Dell!

Well there is your problem. I don't see why you are so surprised.

As far as I can tell, build, testing, and boxing are part of the production phase. If you look online it will tell you production phase, but if you call the automated order checking system it will tell you production - build or production - boxing.

Some of you guys really worry about this stuff way too much for your own good. The fact is talking with Dell on the phone and chatting with them multiple times does basically nothing except get you free next day delivery. Many next day orders do in fact go out standard DHL and get delivered next day. Seriously just relax. Even if it takes a few days to get to you, its just because they upgraded the shipping after the shipping labels were already printed and the trucks allocated.

But they do get delivered the next day, so what is your point that they go out "standard DHL"?

What would be more relevant is if some next day orders go out standard DHL and do not get delivered the next day.

I live on the east coast. Would my laptop be coming from TN? If so, it would take 2 business days (according to a map of the USA on DHL.com). I guess I will be getting my laptop on monday or tuesday.

I guess you guys can expect a little review / Q and A session on Tues or Wed.

If you did chat, you probably did chat with home and home office. I'm not aware of any chat available with business. Home and home office can't access your vostro order to change it to next day business, because that order is with dells business section. I tried chat before and they tried to upgrade me to next day shipping and couldn't do it. I did the automated order status and it also put me on hold... it was home/home office that picked up and after I asked about my order status, they tried to upgrade me too but they also couldn't do it. I got them to transfer me to business and they DID upgrade me to next day shipping, and it showed up on my order status webpage immediately. If you'd had stayed in chat rather than leaving so quickly right after the offer, the rep probably would've told you he was unable to alter your order. You have 3-5 day, but least it's shipped.

You paid for the laptop to get delivered in two days. If your laptop gets there in two days on the back of an old camel that dies in your driveway, you got what you paid for. Very often, DHL Ground gets the item delivered next day (or in two days like you specified), so that is what it gets shipped out as. Do you want DHL to put it on a plane and fly it around in a circle for you so you think you got your money's worth out of it?

I too got next business day shipping, without asking. I Was talking about warranty issues involving moving from the US to Italy:

07/27/2007 02:35:10PM (Agent): "You can fill whenever you wish to move to Italy."
07/27/2007 02:36:00PM (Agent): "The link for the form is http://www.dell.com/content/topics/reftopic.aspx/pub/ccare/transfer_intl?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs"
07/27/2007 02:36:56PM (Me) "Will my coverage change? I suppose I need to read the form"
07/27/2007 02:37:39PM (Agent): "Yes, you need to click on the options."
07/27/2007 02:38:01PM (Me) "Okay. That should be enough to get me started. Thank you for your help!"
07/27/2007 02:38:12PM (Agent): "You are most welcome."

07/27/2007 02:38:15PM (Agent): "How am I doing so far at resolving this issue to your satisfaction? At the end of our interaction an instant survey will be offered to you in this chat window, so please keep the window open to participate in the survey."
07/27/2007 02:38:32PM (Me) "You helped me very well, thank you."
07/27/2007 02:39:56PM (Me) "I do have one more question for you before you go, if you are still there"
07/27/2007 02:40:39PM (Agent): "Sure, you can ask."
07/27/2007 02:41:46PM (Me) "The form says "Systems may not be relocated to an EM-EMEA country for a period of 6 months following purchase without the prior agreement of Dell EM-EMEA." - do you think this means I have to wait 6 months after I receive it first, even if we move in 3 months? "
07/27/2007 02:44:17PM (Me) "I know it is a complicated legal question, so I am not in a hurry"
07/27/2007 02:46:57PM (Agent): "I request you to ignore it."
07/27/2007 02:47:10PM (Agent): "You can fill the form after you receive the order."
07/27/2007 02:47:37PM (Me) "Okay. That is good to know. Thank you again for your help!"
07/27/2007 02:47:39PM (Agent): "The international warranty would be transferred within 10-15 business days."
07/27/2007 02:48:25PM (Agent): "How am I doing so far at resolving this issue to your satisfaction?"
07/27/2007 02:48:37PM (Me) "Great, thank you!"
07/27/2007 02:48:47PM (Me) "Thats all I need to know for now!"
07/27/2007 02:48:50PM (Agent): "You are most welcome."
07/27/2007 02:48:52PM (Agent): "Is there anything else I may help you with today?"
07/27/2007 02:49:38PM (Me) "Do you know if my estimated shipping date of 8/1 is still looking good? I have heard there are some backordered parts. If you dont have any new information, that is okay too."
07/27/2007 02:50:23PM (Agent): "I will be glad to check that for you."
07/27/2007 02:52:21PM (Agent): "Please verify your first and the last name as listed on your account."
    07/27/2007 02:53:00PM (Me) "I think It is **** *****"
    07/27/2007 02:53:43PM (Agent): "Thank you."
07/27/2007 02:53:45PM (Agent): "Please provide me with an alternate telephone number and the best time to contact you.."
    07/27/2007 02:54:05PM (Me) "sure. *** *** ****"
07/27/2007 02:54:21PM (Me) "It is a cell phone, so any time between 9AM and 7 PM Pacific standard time is good"
    07/27/2007 02:54:54PM (Agent): "Thank you."
07/27/2007 02:55:17PM (Agent): "Is ********@******.*** your current email address?"
    07/27/2007 02:55:26PM (Me) "yes"
07/27/2007 02:55:35PM (Agent): "Thank you for verifying the information."
07/27/2007 02:57:13PM (Agent): "The order is estimated to ship by Wednesday, August 1, 2007 now."
07/27/2007 02:57:42PM (Me) "Okay. Thank you. I am looking forward to it!"
07/27/2007 02:58:17PM (Agent): "In order to assist you, I am changing the shipping method to Next Business Day with out any additional charge to you."
07/27/2007 02:58:20PM (Agent): "This will ensure that the order does not spend too much time in transit and is delivered to you on the next business day once the order reaches the carrier after being shipped out of Dell."
07/27/2007 02:58:34PM (Agent): "I will email the tracking information once this order ships out of Dell."

He asked you to ignore the fine print? That seems convenient for them...
