Owners opinions? I intend to option it with the truelife 14**x900 resolution screen. I'v used my friends model (the older, 630m, with the lower resolution glossy screen), the white glow, is more or less, no problem. You struggle to notice it. Im just wondering, how different is the e1405 with the higher resolution screen? Does it bother most users here?
Would it be more noticble, then, ie HP's 14" Model notebooks (v2000?), which i didnt notice showed the white glow down the bottum?
Cheers guys.

I have an E1505 and I have little leakage (and I mean little)
-
The light leakage is not bad at all it is very little -
even if there is some, its not a real problem IMO. Ive had a D800 D810 and D820 all with light leakage, and I wouldnt have known about it if I didnt read these kind of forums

You'll notice light leakage mostly in dark backgrounds. So if you plan to watch a lot of movies (16:9) on it, you could consider it an issue.
-
I only notice it on the black Windows XP screen saver.
Not a big deal in my opinion. -
i have an e1505, and i havnt looked that hard for it, and i havnt found it either.

If you research some posts here, there are a lot of discussions on this topic. I actually got 2 E1405s. One with a LG screen that wasn't very good and one with I think a Quanta screen that was good. My issue with the LG screen was that it was very grainy, had poor viewing angles (i.e if you looked at it the upper left corner was hard to see), and pretty bad light leakage (probably about an inch).
The Quanta is great though. No light leakage, unless you look at it directly from the top, very bright, and good viewing angles.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem as if you can specify what screen you want. It looks like it's pretty much luck with screen you get. Even then, some LG screens are better than other LG screens. -
How can you know the maker of the LCD in your notebook? Thanks.

I got a E1405 a few weeks ago after doing a lot of research on manufacturers..and more importantly...screen types. I went with the Matte screen and the color and contrast are pretty good. Very, very, very litte light leakage, which is only noticable at certain angles on a black screen.
It is a Quanta LCD -
my e1705 has a tiny bit when its pitch black, and its still BARELY noticable
-
yes, most notebooks will show some form of it. But it seems to be common, or severe in the e1405.

I bought two e1405 laptops a few weeks ago and i think we have beat this to death. I am looking at my screen and I have no angle issues. The light leakage is not even noticeable. The screen is clear and not grainy and I love it. You need to take the leap and get it, you wont be dissapointed.
to the guy about how to find out what screen you have go here.

THe lower pictures were taken in the blank screen mode of the screen saver. This is the light leakage but really its not that noticable to the naked eye. The camera was set to a long exposure to show the light so it may be a bit more then we would see.
There is definately a noticable bleen at the bottom about 1/2 inch tall. But you never notice this with normal operation.Attached Files:

I think my e1405 is fine. To be honest, if it weren't for all the posts here I would not have even noticed light leakage. I do notice it, but only if I look for it, and only if the bottom of the screen is black.
-
From the pictures you posted, the lighting does look quite uneven. But i suspect lots of notebooks would be like this.
Do different types of screen for the e1405 go to different countries? -
Oh one more thing, how do you guys find the high resolution, truelife screen, for typing/viewing text intensive internet sites.
I would prefer the 1200x800 truelife glossy, but it seems there is no option for it now. -
Make sure it tells you ULTRASHARP. This is the name Dell uses to describe their high resolution screens, mine is 1440x900 and has great amounts of room to work with for just a 14.1 wide screen.
-
ps:i'm placing my order for the 1405(with best available screen, among others) at the end of this week, so i'll get back with more experience based details.
-
Concerning the light unevenness; that is the way all screens look because of the twist in the transistor color. they will all have the "bow" but what you look for is the light leaking like it does at the bottom of the screen. You have to kind of know what to look for. -
Well I received the notebook today and took the pics but the effect of the camera gave an image similar to airforceone's. Let me assure you, the screen looking nothing as bright as that when you look at it live. I agree that there is a tiny bit of light leakage at the bottom. Very hard to notice unless you REALLY want to stare and convince yourself its a major issue. I got the Tru Life lcd and it is superb. Compared to my Toshiba Satellite m50 which would be the M55 in the U.S....the screen on the Dell is much more crisp, bright, and defined. In my opinion, I dont think the light leakage on the E1405/640M is a concern at all. Nothing to the point where I would say that I woudnt purchase it.
Hope this helps. I will probably do some kind of overall in the next few days. I would do it now but my judgement would be premature -

the only thing stopping me ordering the E1405 is the "Light Leakage" -Owners opinion?
