    hi everyone
i just talked to a csr and he said there is a delay because they are trying to speed up the painting process, and when they do that, dust trickles in between the painting layers and so they have to stall and fix it.if they do it at normal speeds, it dosn't meet dell requirements.heres what he said exactly.

there is a problem going on with the actual painting of the laptops. Every time they try to speed up the painting process to get the orders out dust starts to trickle into the painting layers. So while orders are still shipped out the painting job is slow"
ing everything down meaning if in the background new orders keep coming in but on the other side they cant ship them out fast enough it just stalls everything
But right now every time they try and build these things at normal speed the laptop wont meet the high quality standards they setup. Everything laptop and system is put together in the US plant"

that is the reason for delay.

There are several parts on delay too, and which ones they are seems to change daily, just go to the dell website and configure an inspiron, and see which parts that day have "May delay your shipping date" on them.

But many its the lids, just look at the delays for them, Lowest is 6 days for Jet Black, then the rest are spread apart from 10 days to 17 days! But White doesn't have a delay

other parts on the laptop are minor compared to the lids

i haven't found that to be the most accurate. when i ordered my 1520, i did not have any options selected that stated "may delay your shipping date." i ordered on 7/9 and received my laptop on 8/15.

I fully understand the concept of unexpected delays - for whatever the reason. The real matter is how Dell Customer Care performs and their handling of this with customers.

To me, Dell had two choices:
    1. Concessions to customers if they want to keep the orders. And, I'm not talking $100 after your invoiced coupons some seem to have been promied. Real concessions if they keep folks hanging indefinitely, which is what pushing back ship dates constantly amounts to.
    2. Cancel the orders early on until they perfected this process.

They blew it, I hope they pay a price for it or they will think their customer service is top notch. Only time will tell.

I thought the painting issues were exclusive to the XPS series... Is it true for Inspirons as well? That would explain a lot... I thought they were just having problems with demand for the colors outstripping supply for the inspirons...

apple made lots of money off that whole "pick your color" marketing scheme. I think it was a smart move by dell to mimic that sales technique, but they should have thought about the possible technicalities with the painting process. it's not normal when you wait 40 days for a laptop.

I fully agree. Sounds like a manufacturing engineer's error. Not an unexpected delay. Technicalities of painting most definitely should have been worked out before taking orders.

I just got off an online chat session about my order and the agent said that the processor was on backorder. Last time it was the cover. This could become a never ending circle. Get the processor in and the cover will be on backorder again

I'll be happy if they just give it to me without the paint and take off $300. Apparently, they wouldn't have the paint available 'till the 20th.
