Hi Guys
I bought a second hand Latitude E6400 from Cash Converters UK. The laptop is in a superb condition and I'm verry pleased with it. I checked the tag number and there is over two years remaining in the warranty.
I emailed Dell customer care, and discussed the situation with Robert_P. Robert_P is in charge of Dell's community blog. Bottom line is that Dell won't transfer the ownership of the laptop to me unless I know the name of the original owner.
I've conrtacted Cash Converters and they said that they don't know the name of the previous owner. They don't keep such infromation in their record. I know that Dell knows the name of the original owner. I suggested to Robert_P that Dell can contact him or her and confirm that they sold their laptop to Cash converters. Unfortunately, Robert says that won't help since I have to fill the transfer forms myself and that Dell won't give me the name of the original owner.
Guys any suggestions?
P.S.
I'm not offen online so allow me few days to reply... thanks

Whereabouts are you based?

Did you try this Dell support link? According to that page, all you need is the service tag number. [Note that this page only allows me to perform transfers within the US, since that's where I am. The page says "Transfers can only be made within the same country (US to US, Canada to Canada, Mexico to Mexico, etc.)" so I assume it will either localize to the country you're in, or there's a different country-specific page for you.]

I'm in the UK.

This is the UK form: Dell - Ownership Transfers. As you can see the name of the previous owner is required
-
You could try searching the registry in case the person created a user account with their real name.

I know you're in the UK, whereabouts in the UK?
Cash converters are a fairly big group and I can't help if I don't know where you are. -
When I go to that page, I see a comment that "Valid original owner Information is not required if valid Service Tag and Express Service Code information is provided below." as part of Step 1.
Note that that's the bulk / exception tag transfer page. It will work, but requires Dell to manually validate the tags. There should be a single-tag version which has a "read my service tag for me". If you use that page, the transfer goes through instantly (at least it has for me in the US several times).
If that still doesn't work for you, PM me for another method I'm not going to publicize here. [Just you, not everybody 8-] -
That's not the UK ownership transfer form.
This is
Dell - International Ownership Transfer Form
There are 3 different ownership transfer forms....
1 is single machine North American (inc Mexico, USA and Canada).
1 is multiple machine USA only (that's the one linked above).
and the last is the International Transfer (the one I've linked to in this message).
To do a UK transfer you have to have the original owner details if you're going to fill in the form. -
Are you sure? When I go to that page, I see:
Use this form for the following reasons:
o Owner of product is moving from one country to a new country
o Ownership of a product has changed and new owner is located in a different country -
I'm positive

Ok. It must be showing different things depending on the country the browser is coming from, because I get this:

is it possible to transfer the dell warranty to another country, lets say mexico??

Terry
You asked if I was positive and I told you I was, the reason I'm positive is I've used that form twice in the UK.
The grammatical nonsense on it notwithstanding it's the correct form.
As I said in my earlier posting there's three different forms on Dells website(s) one for single machine transfer inside North America inc Mexico and Canada, One for multi machine transfers in North America only and one for International Transfers. The one I linked is the International Transfer. -
I can't as either the original owner or Cash converters have formatted the harddrive and installed Win7 instead of Vista.
I'll PM you
It's a long story but I don't have internet at home. I'll take my laptop to a friend's house tomorrow and try the above. If it doesn't work I'll PM you.
