Just got my E1705 recently and have been playing around. I was testing the DVD RW drive that came with it and noticed that the drive is EXTREMELY slow (talking about 2~3X DVD read and 1~2X DVD write). I checked around and made sure that both of my IDE channels are on UDMA mode, and have the latest drivers and firmware.
I am running Vista 32-bit. I did a test of AnyDVD + CloneDVD rip/burn, and it took 1 hour. I then tested the drive using Nero CD/DVD Speed, and it reported back Read speed of ~3X
Please tell me it's not normal, and what else can I do to fix it?
Thanks!

Yes. I agree that the speeds you are reporting are not normal but this may be a media problem.
What media are you using? Did you try different media, both +R and -R? What is the CD burning performance?
Nero InfoTool will give the media ID code, or you can use DVD Identifier.
Also, what is the firmware version? The latest firmware is SC03 dated 15 February 07.

The tsstCorp ts-l632D is a DOG. I have one in my Latitude D820. It passes the diagnostics on the Dell Diagnostic Partition, but so could a piece of Town Talk Bread. It never seems to spin at the kind of speed necessary to read/rip at 21st century speeds. Just pretend it's still the 90s.

Try doing a clean boot and see if there are improvements. Also download Nero DriveSpeed so that you could set the speed of the drive.
