sorry to bother all you lovely people again! but I'm having a bit of an odd issue here. Two, actually.

First - the HDD. I've got a 7200 RPM Samsung 200GB w/ Free Fall Sensor... and randomly while doing normal browsing, etc I'll hear a crunchy sound like it's parking, or spinning up/down. Not the normal crunching sound it makes while, say, opening a program, but a louder/shorter one. Hopefully someone knows what I mean lol - it seems like a normal HDD sound, but is it supposed to happen so often?

Second - minor CPU whine. I say minor because I read through the forum and apparently the 'normal' CPU whine that people got was really loud. Mine isn't; it seems to actually correspond to how much the processor's taxed, and if I'm doing something heavy I can hear it sort of grinding away at a really really high pitch. It's not really a whine though because it's barely audible at about a foot away.

Are these normal? I did a clean format/reinstall and installed all chipset drivers, etc. - the only thing I can think of that's making a difference is perhaps the Intel Matrix Storage Manager (RAID drivers) as I don't recall seeing that in the factory install?

    Or maybe it's Avast, lol.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks again :)

Both seem to be pretty common, I don't necessarily have those problems on my XPS but the HD noise I have on my gateway and the CPU noise a friend of mine has on his 1530. I believe there are solutions to both if you do a search on either one.

I did search and couldn't find anything. Also, the CPU whine is definitely not the loud buzzing that has been so talked about here, just to be clear :)

That being said - would you be able to point me in the right direction? It would be much appreciated. :)

I didn't know the 7200rpm did that. It must be a Samsung thing. The 320GB 5400rpm Samsung in my M1330 does the same thing -- makes a weird little crunch now and then.

    Yeah, or a little clunk.

And I just realized that this CPU whine occurs when the CPU is *not* being used, ie while I'm typing this, or not doing anything. As soon as the processor goes into action, it stops. Weird. And even weirder that it doesn't seem to be the whine mentioned earlier because I can only hear it if it's fairly quiet around me.
