    1) Long story short, you can't update the BIOS from BIOS.

    2) Your issue doesn't seem to be one with the BIOS. You should try to reinstall the OS as timolol mentioned.

    3) It is still possible to update the BIOS without an OS. You need to get a hold of a "BIOS Upgrade" CD given to service techs... probably difficult and possibly illegal.

There is no guide. You can't get the CD if you don't work for Dell. It won't help you solve your problem - which looks like an OS issue - either.

Try to change boot priority in bios to cdrom as first. Put windows cd in and after start when the system asks press any button to start from cdrom.

When booting your computer and you get to the BIOS splash screen hit F12 then boot from windows CD.

After you power on the laptop start pressing F12 for the boot screen and choose the "Diagnostics" and let that run, answering any of the question. At least that way you may be able to rule out a hardware issue.

Have your Windows 7 disk in the drive in case it wants to run a repair at the end of the diagnostics.

Doesnt the bios upgrade save the current bios as backup for just this situation? Question is, how do you access it without any means to get past the dell logo or bios screen..
