i read somewhere that they now ship hard drives that no longer make the dreaded "clicking" noise everyone's been talking about. I have gotten used to it, but hell, it would be great if they replace it. Is this true?

Well I just received my Dell laptop today and there is no clicking noise from the hard drive. In fact the whole system is extremely quiet unless the optical drive is running or the fans are blasting from demanding gaming.

hm okay. is there anyone else who had a slightly noisy hard drive in their xps and exchanged it for a new one? btw, the sound is barely audible when there are background noises, and pretty "loud" in a quiet environment.

i just got a 1530 that shipped on 6/10 with the clicking problem. the hd is a western digital 250gig BEVS model.
if u look on the billion page thread about this problem in the main dell forum there is no "real" solution to the problem. users like us did come up with a fix but it makes the hard drive run at full speed so that the head doesn't park, generating heat and cutting the battery life by about 25 minutes or so.
i'm going to call to see if i can get a new hd but i have to wait until the ownership transfer is complete first since i bought it nib on fleabay. do u know if dell specifically addressed this problem or just by coincidence the newer built lappies don't have this problem? -

my laptop used to do it but i havent heard it since my last bios update.

I had one with a 5,400rpm drive that was totally silent, and my current one has a 7,200rpm drive that is NOISY.

I just replaced the noisy Seagate that came on my Vostro with a Hitachi and I couldn't be more pleased. The clicking noise was driving me crazy.

Samsung Drives have been quiet and speedy for me.
