upgrade dell 1300 wi fi card

in the vostra 1500 once i get it for either a super g or n one... can i and is it worth it to do so?? i was thinking about changing the order but i figure id get a better deal on one after the fact.. or should i get one through dell?? thanks

Here's how I see it:

If you can think of one GOOD reason to need wireless N right now, it's worth the upgrade. Most people won't even feel the difference because if you just use wireless to browse the web, B is good enough.

 

You can get the intel n card from amazon for a little over $40. Easy to install.

 

i see a lot of atheros based ones online for like 39$ or less.. would those be a good choice as well??

i will not be doing any file transfers between systems.. it will be for internet usage and downloading different things when needed from the net.. maybe a small file transfer here and there but nothing large at all maybe some music or pics etc...

a concern i have is doesnt the n card use three antennas? where wouldnt the vostra only have 2 installed if i order it with the g card?? how could i remedy this later or do i not have to worry about that.. thanks for the info

 

sorry for another question.. i ahve over 300$ store credit at office depot (long story) and i want to get 2 routers they carry d-link, netgear, linksys, belkin and hawkings what should i get... should i worry about getting a n router for later use if i upgrade or is it better if i stay with g to get a g based router...

what about all these speed "boosters" if i am correct linksys is broadcom would the speed thing they have work with the dell branded card?? sorry again for so many questions but i do appreciate all your help

 

Everyone seems to praise the Intel n card. I've also heard good things about the Aetheros. The Intel seems to be the better choice when driver support is considered. I haven't used either so I couldn't say but I doubt you could go wrong with either choice.

If you're getting an n card for your laptop then get the n router too. People rave about the improved range over b+g. The "boosters" are probably hype... maybe they work if you use all the same compaines products.

 

Why on earth do you need two routers? And unless you're planning to transfer large files frequently, I wouldn't get anything more than G. The Linksys WRT54G (I believe that's the model number) is quite popular.

 

for 2 different places.. one for home the other for my business..

but either way you guys think it better (more worth the $$) to just upgrade the card myself later..??

yeah very few transfers.. maybe ill try g first.. my local office depot store has a d-link "super" g model on sale for 39.99 any one have experience with them?? thats pretty cheap and then this way if i dont spend a lot now i will not feel bad about ditching it down the road for n or better..

how does g do for things like watching tv over the net or streaming video??

If im understanding the question and discussion so far your basically saying is it worth it to just get the wireless g card from dell then upgrade to the n card once you receive the notebook.

The difference in price seems to be about $15 so for me that seems like a hell of a lot to do to save $15 but if the savings is worth it to you then good luck with that.

 

no to add the n card from dell is 50-59$ more depending if i want the dell or intel versions..
