I have had my Vostro 1400 for a couple of weeks. At the time of purchase I chose "3 Year Return to Depot Service, Complete Care and Technical Support ". What is involved in now upgrading to on site service? Can it be done?
What are the mechanics of returning to depot?
-
yes you can.
return to depot means you have to ship your notebook to them, they fix it and send it back, rather than a tech coming to your house next day and fixing it there. -
Don't go for return to depot.
-
why not? don't trust them?
-
Who knows how long you will have no laptop for?
Why give Dell excuse to keep the laptop and you will save how much for this?
You get what you pay for. I think you should just get next day warranty.
Remember, you have to make extra phone calls, worry about the unit being getting to the depot, and to your home every time you have problem w/ it.
IMO, it's just not worth it. -
you wont have to return your laptop for every problem...my dvd burner just died (i have return to depot), and they sent me the drive to replace myself. I'm very happy. You can convince them, if you know what you are doing, to send you any part that is bad, and you just send the bad one back. Personally, since i can repair my own machines, i would rather it be this way. Dell doesn't mind because they don't have to pay shipping on the whole laptop and then pay a technician to fix it and then pay to ship it back to you (they have to fully insure it also during shipping, so it costs them quite a bit.)

I agree, my 1730 was shipped to me without a PhysX Card. So I sent it to a depot and have them install one for me rather than get the laptop replaced. People were telling me to get a new one instead, but who knows what bigger problems I'll have with a new unit. I'm happy with this one other than the fact that it was missing a component.

Think about this though.
Down couple of years, the system doesn't power on at all. You can't pin point what the problem is. You will end up sending your system off while one w/ next day service may be able to convince for a whole new system (this depends on how/who you talk to though) claiming that you have next day service and can't send off your system for couple of weeks.
I think next day is worth paying bit more for the service. -
I agree with the other members. Going with the on site warranty will save you alot of time in the long run if anything does go wrong with notebook. You will be able to get a faster response, and like ACHlLLES said, you won't have to worry so much.
-
M1730 missing a main selling point - physics card is just down right sad though.
-
it doesnt power then you are going to ask for a new system? if the part that the onsite tech will replace doesnt work then he will troubleshoot the system and will verify which part needs to be replace!
-
I was just making an example.
Trouble shoot will take place w/ Onsite and Depot service.
Was it too hard to understand the point I was trying to make?
If you didn't get it, I'm sorry, I really can't do much about it. -
So when I call in to upgrade the ext. warr. from 'return to depot' to 'next day business' I would expect to pay the difference between the two as I see it on the website? (I took delivery a couple of weeks ago)
-
yup you have to pay extra for that!
-
I do know it is extra. I was just making sure before I call in what the extra will be given that I have already taken delivery of the Vostro and have paid for the "return to depot".
-
I called Dell and was told that my warranty was Next Business Day rather than Return to Depot
I have documented this call ie Case # and even confirmed with an online chat later on the same day.
upgrade extended warranty?
