I'm getting a used parts computer for my 6400 (both computers are 3 years old) all I know about the computer is "it was dropped and doesn't work anymore" previous user has taken the hard drive and left everything else to me.
The main thing I want to scavange from it is the processor... I've got the dell service manual for a reference and from what I've researched so far it should be just an easy plug and play replacement.
I just have a few questions about the installation.
what are the odds this processor is in good working order? I'm under the impression hard drives are one of the weakest links in a fall... how robust is the processor?
also do I need to update the bios or any drivers to run new chip?
also worth mentioning is I've got some as5 in the mail![]()

I'd say if it was
p only) dropped, chances of the processor being damaged are quite slim to medium (being wedged between the CPU socket and heatsink).
Just update the BIOS to the latest version, to make sure, so there won't even be the chance that you'll have to remove the new processor, install the old one and update the BIOS later..

Woohoooo! just picked up the new computer.... not a speck of dust anywhere, literally looks like it's fresh out of the box. new cpu, double the ram, tvtuner/remote, upgraded wireless card, new screen (and hinge!) new battery (old one carried NO charge) bluetooth, fan and a keyboard that's not filled with filth. all for a $100CDN, craigslist!
just curious though, I couldn't wait for my as5 in the mail so I just used some regular old goop my friend had in his closet.... is it going to be worth taking it all apart and applying the as5 next week? it was kinda fun so I might just do it for kicks.
also, I've got this sweet monitoring software and the GPU seems to have a pretty high temp (looks like it maxes out round 61) anyone know what the x1400 should be running at? I couldn't get the heat sink off the GPU cuz it was stuck on pretty good... once again, I wonder if it would be worth forcing it off somehow (any suggestions?) and applying the as5
upgrade from t2500 to t7400 inspiron 6400
