I run alot of cpu intensive applications like video encoding and I have been watching cpu prices on newegg. I have the 1.66 ghz 667fsb now, and want to upgrade to the 2.0-2.4ghz 800fsb when I think the price is right. How hard is it to put in a new cpu on the 1720? Has anybody did it yet?

I don't think you can just switch CPUs on a laptop

Mobile C2Ds
As far as if they will work in your laptop, how easy it will be, etc etc I cannot say. And that seems to be the older models, as Santa Rosa procs usually are odd numbers (such as 7100, 7300, 7500) and older models are even (7200, 7400, etc etc). -
I am pretty sure you can upgrade your'e cpu on the 1720, it just needs to be the same socket (socket p)..... I mean, why would Dell offer so many cpu choices if they didn't all work with the 1720? -
You can't just replace the CPU and increase the FSB. It does not work like that. If you can change CPU the FSB is MoBo.

The chipset in the Inspiron 1720 is SANTA ROSA 800mhz fsb and also supports the 667mhz fsb cpu's like I have in it right now. So since it supports 667 and 800 fsb CPU's I should be able to upgrade to a 800mhz fsb cpu......

I haven’t done it, but it would probably void your warranty. Buying a slower CPU hoping to upgrade is not a good idea; think of the hassle, risk of losing warranty and finally the price (unless you sell your old CPU for a considerable amount, you will lose more money than upgrading it from DELL in the first place).

Metamorphical Good computer user
It can be done, but be warned doing so will void your warrenty with Dell.
-
yes you can, but it is a pain in the ass having to take the laptop aart to do it -
I wanna do the same thing - but - Can i just return it to Dell and ask them to upgrade it; however I have purchased the laptop and I don't wanna lose the offers that are with it. (It is currently in transit lol!!) - Or - if I did upgrade it myself, are you sure that would void warranty?
Any extra help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
