at the moment i have a ati x1300 and i'm thinking of upgrading my graphics card to something else, either a x1400 or the nvidia card that dell supply with the newer 6400's just wondering if anyone knows what model it is and if it'll fit mine

(i think its a 7900GS but the ones i've seen are for normal pcs not laptops)

Don't think there's an Nvidia option for the E1505. Think the only upgrade for you is the X1400 (Dell Part # WF148).

The GPU on the 6400 is not upgradeable [unless you want to change the motherboard ], please read the GPU Guide for more info.

The 6400's with the integrated Intel video cannot be upgraded/changed.
The 6400's with ATI or Nvidia video can be upgraded/changed.

My bad on the Nvidia statement in comment #1 above. My spreadsheet only has the ATI video cards listed in it for the 6400. There is a 256MB Nvidia GeForce Go 7300 TurboCache videocard for the 6400. I don't have the part # for it.

The X1400 is the strongest card for the 6400.

You can only use graphics cards that are available as an option for 6400 to upgrade, which are : X1300, X1400 and Go7300 (which is more or less same as the X1300). So, the only "upgrade" would be to get a X1400, but IMO the performance difference is not worth the cost at all.

So let me get this straight.
You can upgrade if you bought the 6400 model with a card, but not if you bought the integrated one? That's sort of lame.

Would it be worth it to buy a new motherboard to get a card?

No it would not, you would be better off selling what you have and buying another one from dell or the outlet with the specs you need. it would be around $400+ for the board and $200 for the video card new, plus the total voiding of your warranty and risk of totally borking your system during the swaps.

IĀ’m not trying to rude ;) , but cant help when people talk of notebooks as if they are desktops in compact chassis. What is lame is actually buying a notebook hoping to upgrade the graphics card. Because they are not designed like that.
